Book Description

October 15, 2010

Including an introduction by Simon Henwood and preface by Alexandre Vauthier, this is the official visual chronicle of the year’s “it” girl as she embarks on her first solo tour.

Hardcover includes CD with a song from her latest album, Rated R.

The millions of sites tracking her every fashion move, the innumerable magazine covers including the recent Italian Vogue shot by Steven Klein, her past endorsement deals including Gucci and CoverGirl—Rihanna is the reigning style icon of the moment. She has garnered multiplatinum–selling success as an artist (her current album, her fourth, Rated R had the highest first-week sales of any of her other albums in the U.S. to date). She has won Grammys, MTV Video Music Awards, and countless other accolades for her performances. Simon Henwood captures the supernova at the height of her beauty and ferocity in photographs that track her enormous influence on current culture—from Paris Fashion Week to her shoot with Ellen von Unwerth in Berlin for her album artwork to her special appearance at the American Music Awards to her tour performances in the most cutting-edge couture.

Review

"...damn interesting" ~Ebony

"Rihanna is a richly illustrated, chronological guide, a monumental album and tour that marked Rihanna's presence as a musical/fashion force to be reckoned with.  It covers the key collaborators, the countless controversies, the ever-changing fashions, and everything in between, with pullout for each phase of her career thus far." ~LePetitBlog

"Rihanna is a new book from the singer's creative director Simon Henwood that documents - in words and absolutely gorgeous photograph - the superstar's life like we've never seen it before. From Paris Fashion Week to onstage during her Last Girl on Earth world tour, we promise you will flip when you see the more than 200 pics in the book." ~E! Online

3.0 out of 5 stars IMO October 30, 2010
Format:Paperback
So I finally got the book in my hands today and I was pretty underwhelmed. I open the book and the first picture is Rihanna on her couch smiling and grabbing her crotch. It's more adorable than I can describe :). But after that it's really not that candid. Actually that couch pic is the only one where shes smiling. For the rest shes staring at the lens behind shades in a cold 'too cool for school' pose...if she's looking at the lens at all...if her face is in the pic at all. Also half the time we dont know where we're taken in this journey and the narrative is largely lost. Yes it's Rihannas face, her photo shoot set ups, her stuff, her in a meeting/discussion (?), etc but why/where?! Then there are the useless pictures of shoes and the one with a wristful of jewels and a few others. Why show those when her costumes and even backup dancer's costumes were WAY more interesting. There wasnt even that much on the stage set up! When I finished the book (like 2 minutes later) I walked away to see if I would remember any of the pictures and couldn't recall more than five. And only two of those I actually liked (The first and the last)I think the efforts used to put forth this picture book should've maybe been used for a Rated R tour dvd with a behind the scenes feature. Either way, whatever the camera points to, the picture is usually of high quality and gorgeous so three stars for shiny glossy piccys! :)

2.0 out of 5 stars Rihanna June 12, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was curious to see if this book was a true behind the scenes look at the campaign behind the Rated R album and tour. Sadly it is not - as a coffee table book it is glossy and the pics are pretty but after one viewing you'd probably never want to look at it again. I'd highly recommend it to Rihanna fans but as someone who hoped that SHE would open up about her thought process behind her "imaging", it's a disappointing effort.

For starters, Rihanna offers no commentary - her tour director, the photographer do but not the subject of the book which I found odd. I know that this book was created following the incident with Chris Brown and her handlers were very protective of her but they wasted an opportunity to create a really good book in which Rihanna could have offered HER thoughts on the process of creating the album, going to fashion shows to determine "the look" she was going for, the creation of her tour, etc but instead there are wasted pages of pics of shoes, jewelry, and yes Rihanna playing dress-up.

The pics of her overseas do give readers a sense of the whirlwind that her life was at that time and it looks like an amazing series of experiences that could've been enhanced by her commentary about them. But then afterwards for example, there are pics of them creating a cast of Rih and some gratuitous pics of her practically nude as a "science project" but readers aren't told what this casting or the other is for so I was confused and a little disturbed by the pics.

1.0 out of 5 stars Save your money November 29, 2010
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was extremely disappointed by the Rihanna book. It did not have many behind the scene pictures of Rihanna and it was not interesting at all. It is a good book to see once but, not to own. I wish I had a chance to see it before I purchased it. The c.d. that come's with it has one song in it. This information provided was very misleading, it did not include her c.d. from her latest album. Do not buy this book. It is not worth the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book November 22, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this book kind of late since my money had been tight but it wasn't a disappointment. I would recommend this to everyone, its a full colored photo book and story about what Rihanna was doing while making her "Rated R" album, and it talks about her fashion, and even how they came up with her "R" symbol. It took me an hour to read this book from front to back upon arrival and it is definitely worth your buy. It has fierce awesome photos, but you shouldn't expect anything less coming from Rihanna :]

If I could give it a thumbs down with no stars I would. Not even artistic, just bad. Photos are not good. What is the point of this book?
