This product has been given to me as a review unit. It arrived about 3 days after it was sent from LaptopMate's warehouse. Took it out of the package, and I was presented with a nice looking green box, similar to Logitech's box design. The bottom of the box tells you about all the features of the keyboard. Upon opening the box, I was presented with the keyboard in its plastic bag, ready to be taken out and used. Under the pull-out tray, you get an instruction manual, and a mini USB cable for charging.

The manual is well-written in English, with minor mistakes that shouldn't confuse too many people. The manual tells you the safety information, instructions on how to use the keyboard, and a small list of troubleshooting instructions in the back.

The keyboard is well-built; the body is sturdy, and doesn't feel like it will fall apart easily. It is lightweight, and feels like only half the weight of a TV remote. On the sides, it has a mini USB port, the laser and its button, the on/off switch, and a slot where the wireless receiver is stored. To use any functions of the keyboard, you must turn it on. I was glad that the keyboard had a built-in rechargeable battery, I'm not a fan of buying a bunch of AAA batteries to operate my gadgets. The laser isn't the strongest, but it fares well for presentation from about 50 feet away. The keyboard also has a white backlight; not too bright, not too dark, perfect for operating your computer in the dark.

Now, onto the top of the keyboard where most things are found. The letters are printed clearly, and the keyboard overall has a good tactile feedback; also, the keys are made of rubber, so it makes typing pretty comfortable.

The Rii keyboard was an inexpensive replacement for my Logitech diNovo Mini after my trusty mini started to break down on me. I am going to continuously make comparisons between the two keyboards to help out those who have narrowed down their choices between these two keyboards. The positive things about this keyboard first:

- Backlit keys (A must have feature for Home Theater PC enthusiasts - Press Fn + F1 to light up)

- Small form factor.

- Even lighter than the diNovo Mini.

- Built in laser pointer (although I don't know anyone who needs a laser pointer in their living room)

- The Fn keys light up also, unlike the diNovo Mini.

- The orientation of the keyboard can be changed to optimize one hand function (Press Fn + Alt).

Now the negatives:

- Awkward design - you will have to stretch out your right thumb a little far to reach the keys - diNovo makes it completely natural (Don't get me wrong, its not a deal breaker, I can compromise with that if I am paying only half the price of diNovo).

- The touch pad is too small to navigate across some applications - if you are used to the large, circular touch disk of the diNovo mini, you will immediately notice the lack of real estate available on the Rii keyboard's touchpad. You will have to drag across the touch pad multiple times to get from one corner of the screen to the other. Again, something I can compromise with.

- The user manual is too short and missing a lot of information about important functions of the keyboard (how to light up the keys/ change orientation, etc). This again is not a big deal.

The software required to make this work with Android is easy to side-load onto the phone, but when you attempt the required activation, it replies: "Activation failed. Please retry before using this software. Application will now close." It does this every time you attempt to start the program. A quick google search of this message reveals that it may be because the Chinese manufacturer has not paid the necessary licensing fees to use the code contained in the software. So that leaves the Android user of this keyboard pretty much s.o.l.

Further reading on the matter revealed a work-around that may work for some. Uninstall the software and attempt to pair with the standard bluetooth. When prompted for code on the phone, enter "0000" and press "OK" then enter "0000" and press Enter on the phone, which will then allow it to pair& connect for this one session. So far, I have had to do this every time I want to connect the keyboard to my phone.

My recommendation is to avoid this keyboard if you are purchasing it to pair with an Android phone.

UPDATE: After 3 times of having to enter the "0000" stuff each time I connected to my phone, it began connecting OK without it. I'm updating my recommendation to 3 stars. If the customize able software worked to allow programming the function keys, I would give this 5-stars!

There are so many of these sold on Amazon, it took some time to sort through them to figure out which one was the real Rii Bluetooth Keyboard. The original has a bluetooth symbol on the keys and does not need a dongle to connect through USB, although it has one if you need it. It also comes in the manufacturer's box as pictured and not the white bootleg box. This keyboard hooked up with my Iconia W500 tablet easily. I hooked up my tablet to my big screen and used the keyboard about 7 feet away and it worked fine. Once you pair it the first initial time to your device you do not have to pair it each time you turn it on, just flip the power on and it should start working. It is small, slim and does as advertised. I am very happy with it. The only thing that doesn't make it a five for me is that you have to make sure you are in direct line of sight with nothing blocking it, but that is no big deal to me. I am satisfied with my purchase.
