One of the best children's stories ever,
By
This review is from: Rikki-tikki-tavi (Candlewick Treasures) (Hardcover)
Everyone will love Rikki Tikki Tavi. He is cute and furry, he has been rescued from certain death by his humans, and best of all he fights snakes in a land where they are an everyday part of life - and death. This is not just a story for children. The writing is sophisitcated enough to appeal to adults and is very funny in parts, and very touching in others. But it is a great story to share with children - it touches on all the things we want for our kids - strong and loyal friends, a protective and supportive family, and the ability to know when its time to stand up for yourself, and take risks if you need to. It is a really wonderful story (as are all of Mr Kipling's - to be fair) but this is quite a masterpiece. Share it with a special child and enjoy it all the more.

i remember having this book read to me when i was a little boy, i think it was back in elementary school....we used to all go into the library, and the librarian had the little reader corner...... i think i even saw the video of this one too...watching the mongoose outsmart the snakes.....personally i recall that the mongoose was actually named something different, that went something like "rikki-tikki-tembo-nosarembo-charlie-barley-ruchi-pip-berry-pembo" - however noone that i've talked to remembers it that way, but i can't figure out how i could have made that one up.anyway.....for all you adults out there, this one is a perfect reading for your kids when it's bedtime....they will get a little adventure, and a little mystery, but not enough to scare them or give them bad dreams :) highly recommended for ages 4 to 6 Update: 3/10/2005 A wonderful person emailed me to validate my rememberance of the strange long name that I refer to above. After further investigation, I discovered where we remembered this from another book/story which Amazon has for sale as Tikki Tikki Tembo: Reading level: Ages 4-8 Hardcover: 32 pages hardcover Publisher: Henry Holt and Co. (BYR) (March 15, 1968) ISBN: 0805006621 or Reading level: Baby-Preschool Paperback: 32 pages (softcover) Publisher: Henry Holt and Co. (BYR); Reissue edition (September 15, 1989) ISBN: 0805011668 An exerpt from the book info (including correct spelling of the long name): If you haven't already read Tikki Tikki Tembo, you've probably heard at least someone recite the deliriously long name of its protagonist: Tikki tikki tembo-no sa rembo-chari bari ruchi-pip peri pembo, by now a famous refrain in most nursery schools.

Rikki Tikki Tavi is not Tikki Tikki Tembo,
By A Customer
This review is from: Rikki-tikki-tavi (Candlewick Treasures) (Hardcover)
Like Heath, I also remembered two different books from my childhood that seemed to have the same title. After doing some research on the Internet I finally figured it out: There is this wonderful Kipling book about the mongoose and then there is the childrens' book Tikki Tikki Tembo by Arlene Mosel where poor little Chang falls into a well and his brother Tikki tikki tembo-no sa rembo-chari bari ruchi-pip peri pembo tries to save him but gets winded just trying to tell his name to the people he is asking for help. I too have memories of having this book read aloud to me in the library as a child.
