I am really happy that I found this! I love my Rikon lathe but I have been lusting over the variable speed Delta. Rikon has a variable speed lathe but you loose some features like indexing. This kit gives you the best of both worlds. If you buy the Lathe when Wood Craft has it on sale, the price with the kit is compairable the the Delta. If you have already have the Rikon lathe it saves you from buying a new one, unless of course you can convince your wife that you need two.
The kit is easy to install, takes about an hour. The hardest part was getting the old pully off to retrieve the motor bracket. I had to heat mine up with a torch and made a wedge out of a piece of 2X4 and it finnaly came loose. This really makes a nice package. I also bought a handheld Tach from Amazon to check the speeds. It's not really neccesary, but fun to show to your buddys.

It's a bit of a pain to install and the instructions are not fantastic, but once you get it all set up it's great! I love not having to change belts to vary my turning speed.

While this is a pricey upgrade to my Rikon lathe, I have to admit it makes a big difference it how I use it. With the original single speed motor, I found that I usually just set it up to turn at about 1800 rpm and left it there, whether turning, sanding or finishing. It was just a convenience thing about having to manually change the belt position. I now vary the speed easily and find that it does make the projects turn out just a little better and the process a whole lot easier. Like other reviewers, I found the installation to be a bit of a pain with the biggest problem for me coming in trying to get the wiring grommets to release from the mounting plate. It takes a special tool to open the grommet clamp and it was a tool I didn't have. Frustrating but not insurmountable. Other than that, it is fairly straight forward to hook up. Purchasers should note that this is a universal motor and consequently takes a couple of seconds to reach speed when first started. This varies a lot from the original motor. Overall, I am happy with my purchase. I improved my lathe and have a backup motor should this one ever fail.

This item does the awesome thing of providing you with variable speed at the turn of a knob - that cannot be understated. In my case, I was often using the wrong RPM for a given task simply because I was too lazy to switch belts. Now, because of how easy it is - I do vary my RPM a lot. Besides some difficulty getting the cord restraints to fit snugly, my biggest problem lies with the torque or horsepower. It says it is .5 HP but it doesn't feel as meaty as the original motor. I find it stopping here and there when I try an aggressive bite into the wood. In a way this has helped me, because the lack of torque has stopped my bowls from turning when the bite I was taking may have caused a huge tearout or further catastrophe. However, my skills have been honed and I feel more confident with my technique and find myself wanting more horsepower. I haven't put the old motor back in but I find myself wanting a 3/4HP variable speed alternative.
