Book Description

May 12, 2006
Riley Martin is a boy whose great curiosity takes him to a place he never imagined and a future that might seem impossible. But impossible is a word that doesn't exist for Riley.

A second grader from El Paso, Texas, he lies in a high hospital bed in the original Shriners Burns Institute in Galveston. He has third-degree burns over 63 percent of his small body and face, the result of his experiment with gasoline from the lawn mower and a match.
But inside that burned body glows a steady spirit.

In this debut novel, set in such an unlikely place, a boy and his parents face the future—his and theirs. Riley's mother has been with him every day since a private plane brought them to Galveston immediately after the accident. His father comes for weekends when he can. The isolated hospital universe, the other children being treated there, Riley's mother's furious grief at her son's disfigurement, and his father's determined support are fictional creations informed by extraordinary knowledge, empathy, and skill.
But it is Riley himself who charms and twists the reader's heart—Riley, a boy so compelling in his innate boyness and buoyancy that his presence transforms the setting, the circumstances, the pain, the loss, even his own expectations.

He is one of those rare beings who embody the human spirit in the act of transcending reality. His story is, above all else, a reward.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

This slim novel is set in the almost suffocatingly insular world of Galveston's Shriner's Burns Institute. It is here that seven-year-old Riley Martin is being treated for third-degree burns that cover most of his face and body. The burns are the horrifying result of a fire Riley accidentally started. Riley's story, and the stories of his roommates and parents, is told from his somewhat unreliable viewpoint. This viewpoint limits the novel, given Riley's early lack of consciousness and his lack of understanding of some of the issues involved in his care and in the dynamics of those around him. The limitation is especially clear when it comes to his mother, a disturbed and disturbing character clearly on the verge of a nervous breakdown. As an adult, the reader is drawn to her, and wants to know more about her and her situation. However, there is a seductive dreamlike quality to both Riley and the book that helps overcome the narrative limitations. Marta Segal

"[A] powerful first novel . . . Byrd forges a riveting story that, in the end, is astonishingly uplifting."

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointingly clumsy, August 10, 2006
By
Sandy Beach (Galveston, Texas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Riley's Fire (Hardcover)
Oh dear, I really wanted to like this book but found the writing so clunky and haphazard (slipping in and out of the child's POV and vocabulary) that it was hard to finish. The only reason I gave it any stars at all was that Riley's self-acceptance and the explanation he ultimately came up with for his situation were lovely and touching.
By then, however, the story was poisoned by her casual racism--which then Byrd compounds by creating some racist characters, who at least are more open and self-aware about it than Byrd herself! There's just no excuse for perpetuating the negative stereotypes about African-Americans; it's as if Byrd really thinks they're all welfare queens, ex-cons and dialect-spouting orderlies.

2.0 out of 5 stars Sad, June 19, 2006
By
Marion (Albuquerque, New Mexico) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Riley's Fire (Hardcover)
The childhood tragedy of the story pulled me into a read, but the writing is not very good. It is exhausting as prose. It is one of those stories that makes you feel guilty for not liking it, as if you're not being generous. The writer clearly had been throuhg the terrible tragedy with her own child, and that is very sad for her and of course her child. If she's going to write about this, however, I shouldn't feel any more guilty to say I didn't like how it was told if she's all right with using it as material.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, May 30, 2006
By
Scott Smith (Providence, RI) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Riley's Fire (Hardcover)
Because the author's sons were burned in a playhouse fire, I was intrigued by her personal story and wanted to see how that would play out in this fictional account of a burn victim. I was disappointed by this book that I found confusing and difficult to understand. Since the story is told from an 8 year old burn victim's perspective, the storytelling is limited. I was longing for more detail that an 8 year old would not have the maturity or knowledge to explain. I almost wish Lee Merrill Byrd told the story from a mother's perspective. There certainly are disturbing images throughout the book that are difficult to stomach, most notably the way Riley's mother treats him. However, I found myself struggling to get through this book. With short chapters and big margins, it should have been a page turner, yet I finished the book with more questions than answers.
