I recommend this book to anyone who loves Rilke, December 10, 2008
This review is from: Rilke on Death and Other Oddities (Paperback)
I've long enjoyed the book "Rilke on Love & Other Difficulties" by this same author. Now he's come out with another one in similar form to the first one, a semi-essay on death taken from Rilke's prose; the first book had a semi-essay on love from Rilke. But there's no poetry in this new book, except what is quoted in essays. And it's not morbid; I was a little worried about that. There's a long chapter on Rilke in pop culture that's fun, ending with movies and rock. One chapter is, surprise!, on Rilke's humor. Another is on the scientific accuracy of his poetic images. The final chapter, to which every thing else leads, is on Rilke's great long poem, "Duino Elegies" (which Mood calls "Duinese Elegies"). I whole-heartedly recommend this book to anyone who loves Rilke or is interested in the phenomenon of death (in a non-morbid way).
