4.0 out of 5 stars Not your average gunslinger, May 7, 2001

This review is from: Rimrock (Originally The Deputy) (Reno Western Saga #2) (Paperback)
I really liked the humanity of this character. Reno has been through the mill and doesn't just bounce back like in other westerns. He is not perfect but he is searching. He thinks, he chooses for good or bad and when he falls, he learns while getting back up. Read this under previous title (The Deputy).

5.0 out of 5 stars Complex. Emotionally mature.., August 11, 2009
This review is from: Rimrock (Originally The Deputy) (Reno Western Saga #2) (Paperback)
Long ago, back when the New York Times was a well-regarded paper, I saw a quote from a NYTimes review of a Western (as stated, they were once a decent paper)that said "emotionally mature". That description fits this book.

This book is a complex morality book;,twists and turns abound as courage turns to cowardice, cowardice to courage, ignorance to knowledge, loss to gain to loss. Jim Reno, the war-weary drifter, is a seeker for his place in life, but nothing comes easy for him. In the tough trail town of Rimrock, he faces not only himself but the lightning draw of a faster man.

Really a fine book that goes well beyond the average western in emotional depth.
