I'm not sure what caused the previous reviewer's problem: faulty disc or faulty amplifier. What I do know is that this is a splendid recording. I'd heard the Rimsky-Korsacov concerto on SonicTap and decided I wanted it. I'm playing the disc right now and it's already one of my fovorite piano pieces ever. The recording is crisp and clear with superb acoustics. This is most definitely a keeper.

I purchased this disc because I've recently wanted to broaden my library of Rimsky-Korsakov compositions, and the Piano Concerto was one piece that I had not heard and wanted to explore.

Turning to my normal resources for recommendations - I found no listing whatsoever for this piece in The Gramophone Classical Music Guide 2012, nor does the The Penguin Guide to the 1000 Finest Classical Recordings include it. The Penguin Guide to Recorded Classical Music 2008 offers one recommendation - Romantic Piano Concerto Vol. 5: Balakirev: Piano Concertos Nos. 1 and 2 / Rimsky-Korsakov: Piano Concerto, with Malcolm Binns on piano. That Hyperion disc is undoubtably a fine recording, but it was a bit more than I wanted to spend.

The lack of recommendations suggests that this not a very well known composition. Finally turning to friends on the online classical forum, they recommended this disc, and I'm very satisfied with it.

It features Jeffrey Campbell on piano, with Gilbert Levine conducting the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Sound quality is superb and the performance is excellent.

In his notes to the recording, Campbell explains how he felt that this Piano Concerto has been seldom heard because of its uninspiring cadenza, and so he has written his own cadenza and this recording incorporates it into the performance.

You cannot enjoy this CD. Volume has to be increased substantially to listen to this, there is also a hiss on the recording which is disturbing.
