Absolutely Wonderful, November 21, 2003
If you are a fan of pre-bop era (pre-modern) jazz of any kind, this album is a must for your collection. It was recorded at a live performance in Hamburg Germany and chronicles one of those very rare evenings when everything was just right. It is definitely not Dixie, but includes tunes by Waller, Ellington, Armstrong and others that should best be described as small group "Swing". I own over 3,000 Jazz albums and this is one of only a handful that I can play from end to end, over and over. In fact, I have to be careful when I put it on because I am inevitably glued to it for its entirety. All of the musicianship is absolutely first rate and Marty himself is his usual, wryly humorous, entertaining self. It's hard to believe this album's been out since 1995 and nobody's even reviewed it. It may be hard to get but the effort will be well worth it. A true rarity indeed! Miss this one at your own peril.
