A mix of old favorites and covers, March 24, 2007
This review is from: Ring of Fire: the Legend of (Audio CD)
I totally enjoy listening to some of the collections that have been put together around Cash's career. These albums not only give a variety of the many different types of music he recorded, but they seem to a flavor about them that separates him from any other artist. Three tracks on the disc that caught my attention were Rusty Cage, and his covers of Hurt and One. Both covers are without question phenomenal. Hands down; they are the best cuts on this disc and probably my two favorites from all of his work.

All the Cash You Need, March 5, 2007
This review is from: Ring of Fire: the Legend of (Audio CD)
A great collection of the 50's and 60's classics that spawned the career of the man in black. You will find most of your favourite, the well known and most impressively, some of his terrific late career covers and originals from the American Label. "Rusty Cage" "Hurt" and "One" which I personally rate 200 times better than the U2 original. Everyone should own a JC CD and this one is the one to get for a casual fan.

Johnny Cash Is A Great Artist Whether You like Him Or Not !, March 14, 2010
This review is from: Ring of Fire: the Legend of (Audio CD)
In the mid 1950s Sun Records had some of the best artists around, take Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Obison and Charlie Rich for starters.
However for me it's got to be The Man In Black who tops the lot.
Some his earliest songs from Sun are here, for example I Walk The Line, Folsom Prison Blues and Get Rhythm.
His years on Columbia/Sony are represented by such great tracks as Ring Of Fire, A Boy Named Sue and San Quentin.
(Ghost Riders) In The Sky is one I would have liked to have been included, Wanted Man is another that did not make the cut.
Man In Black from the 1971 album of the same name is a song that no one else could have sung without being open to ridicule, that's the measure of the man.
I can't say I've followed his career too closely in his latter years.
Having said that his interpretation of Personal Jesus, originally sung tonge in cheek by Depeche Mode , is a masterpiece.
Sometimes I hear a Johnny Cash song for the first time and think, wow, how fresh and alive he sounds!
I recommend this very highly and his Live At Folsom Prison and Live At San Quentin albums.
