Anita Ward in the 80's,
By Mike Burt (New York, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ring My Bell (Audio CD)
Best known for her hit, "Ring My Bell", Anita Ward went out of the public eye in 1980 after she was unable to follow up "Ring My Bell" with a substantial hit song. In 1989, she recorded this album in the US and was later released in 1990, but only in certain European countries. It has finally made it's way to the US as an import via a re-release.
Overall, the album is cheesy, cliche 80's music, so don't expect much more. A few of the songs are catchy, and the lyrics are smart, clean and sometimes relate-able. Specific standouts include "When A Woman Loves", "Have I Got A Girl For You", "Tough Love" and "I'll Be The Girl". The re-recording of "Ring My Bell" just doesn't quite hold a candle to the original, nor does the Latin Mix included on this CD. The rest of the tracks are somewhat forgettable and/or terrible. Anita's voice is great throughout the album and changes pitch quite a bit, so it really shows off her vocal talents. Also, for whatever reason (possibly due to poor mastering?), 90% of the album has terrible sound quality, but it definitely didn't affect my listening experience. So, if you're looking for some cheesy 80's music with great lyrics or if you're a fan of Anita Ward, I recommend it since it is relatively cheap right now.
