Book Description

The magical Jolly Carnival travels the country every summer, delighting audiences both young and old with their amazing acts, and granting the wishes of their punters. For every wish fulfilled, the magic within the Carnival grows stronger.

But something has happened to the cycle of prosperity within the Carnival—their magic grows weak, and their way of life is threatened. When her father, the Ringmaster, dies in suspicious circumstances, Rilla must not only convince everyone that she has what it takes to lead the Carnival, but also to uncover the perpetrator of the sabotage rocking their small community.

But she has an unexpected rival for the role of Ringmaster—an old friend of her father’s appears, demanding to be considered. He and his outsider son Jack turn everything upside down, including Rilla’s certainty that she’s the right person to lead the Carnival.

To save her beloved Carnival, Rilla must do everything she can to find the saboteur. But if she takes her eye off the battle for Ringmaster—even for a second—she risks losing everything she’s trained for her entire life.

Editorial Reviews

About the Author

I’ve always loved books, and the stories they bring to life in my head. I’ve always had an overactive imagination as well, and distinctly remember sitting at the base of the big oak tree at school when I was a kid, building houses for the fairies, telling their stories as I went. Born and raised in New Zealand, I have also lived in the UK, US, and Denmark. I love to meet new people; it’s a fantastic way to gain exposure to new ideas and cultures and, of course, to get story ideas. For the last ten years I’ve been a magazine writer, and currently I get to write about innovative and cutting-edge research for a tertiary institution in New Zealand. It’s an inspiring job, talking to people about their passion, and I try to tell their stories in the best possible way. I live in a secluded haven amongst the trees in Auckland with my lovely husband and cheeky three-year-old daughter. I enjoy yoga, although I’m not very bendy, and karate, although I don’t like the idea of hitting anyone. I’ve worked as a camp counsellor, a waitress, a checkout girl, a citizenship officer and an editor. But none of those jobs compares to being able to call myself a writer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Applause June 14, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I just finished this book, and let me tell you, I wish it wasn’t over. This is one of those books that you mourn when it is done. From the minute I picked it up I could not put it down!

I would like to applaud the author for coming up with a story line that I had never seen before. Most books I read, while I enjoy them very much, are not something really new. I had never read a story with the magic carnival before.

You would think a story about a magic carnival would be hokey, but so not the case with this book. And normally when I think of a Carney, it doesn’t paint a very pretty picture. In this book, the carnival has very beautiful and poignant characters.

This book crosses several genres. At heart it is a paranormal, but it is also a beautiful romance and an exciting and intriguing mystery. I can’t wait to read the next one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Magic circus - no scary clowns June 4, 2014
By MMurphy
Format:Kindle Edition
I received this book from the author and from Paranormal Romance and Authors That Rock.
I'm giving this book 5 fangs. I couldn't put it down.
Ringmaster is full of suspense, romance, magic and intrigue. As Rilla and Jack compete to be the ringmaster of the carnival they also have to become allies against the saboteur.
The carnival was magical and the author brought it and the carnies to life brilliantly. This is the first book in the series, but although it wasn't a stand alone it didn't really have a cliffhanger.
I loved this book and am looking forward to enjoying the second when it releases. I would recommend this to anyone who reads paranormal suspense/romance NA and Adult.

5.0 out of 5 stars Carnival magic! May 27, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book has everything I love - magic and mystery, excitement and romance. It drew me in right from the start and was hard to put down. This is no ordinary carnival, and I really liked the magical touches that made it so different. I'll definitely be getting the next book in the series when it comes out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Whodunit under the Big Top August 13, 2014
By Mary M
Format:Paperback
I loved this debut novel from Trudi Jaye. How does she do it? Ringmaster has it all - mystery, suspense, murder, the romance of the circus - plus the romance of romance! I predict a great future for Rilla and Jack and I can hardly wait to find out where the author will take them, and her readers, next.

An original concept with well drawn characters. Who could ask for more. I'm not one for giving away plot lines but I did really enjoy the whole "gift" idea. Looking forward to the next in the series.

Roll up, roll up for a thoroughly intriguing mix of magic, mystery and romance!

As mentioned by a couple of other reviewers, I haven't come across a carnival setting before and I loved it. Trudi Jaye creates an exciting and interesting world with fabulous heritage. Add in the mysteries of the carnival's own magic and the powers it gives the carnival's characters, and this is a can't-put-it-down kind of read.

What I enjoyed the most was the relationship between Rilla and Jack. At first they're at complete loggerheads, the heir apparent to the Ringmaster's role and the complete newbie who struggles to understand the carnies' world. Together they must race to find out who's sabotaging the carnival and save their livelihood and heritage, and Ms Jaye takes us on quite an adventure through those last few chapters before delivering a satisfying and feel-good ending.

Well-written and a thoroughly enjoyable story.

I'll be setting time aside to read the second book in the series, The Gift, one weekend soon.
