Biography

Richard Starkey is best known to the world as the Beatles' drummer. As an integral part of the revolutionary 'Fab Four', Ringo Starr helped change the world of pop music. Starr didn't join The Beatles until 1962, after original drummer Pete Best was sacked. As a drummer his proficiency is often under-rated, or derided as simplistic, but he remains an influence on many of today's best rock… Read more in Amazon's Ringo Starr Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully sounding pure simple pop, March 11, 2008
This review is from: Ringo 5.1 (DVD Audio)
We all know that Ringo Starr is not the best of the musicians in the world, but I'm sure we know that he was the one in charge of, together with Paul McCartney, creating The Beatles's rhythm section. And we mustn't forget that, despite the fact that he has never been a composer a-la-Lennon & McCartney, his judgements and commentaries were crucial for the development of some of their (Lennon & McCartney's) songs. After The Beatles his career was irregular, at times horrible (Ringo the 4th, Bad Boy). But thanks to his back to roots, thanks to the different reincarnations of his All Starrs Band, and his quitting dangerous ways of life, he managed to produce brilliant pop records, such as Time Takes Time, Vertical Man, Ringo Rama, Choose Love, or his most recent output Liverpool 8. All of them represent the essence of sixties pop: vocal harmonies, guitar licks, drum patterns, bass phrases, simple lyrics...
You may not want to have all those records. Probably, one after the other, especially the Mark Hudson produced ones, may sound quite similar. But, hey! why don't you try this selection of brilliant pop tunes, which perfectly encapsulate Ringo Starr's vision of music, called Ringo 5.1? The 5.1 mix is simply delicious and marvellous. You get to appreciate the musicality of the recordings, the simplistic finesse of Ringo's drumming. His voice may not sound as powerful as Lennon's or McCartney's... you do know that for sure! But listen to this record, 5.1 mix, without prejudice, expecting pop in its purest manifestation, with all the ingenuity that goes with it. If you want to learn what's pop, listen to this.
Thank you very much Ringo for keeping vertical.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good multichannel, April 5, 2008

This review is from: Ringo 5.1 (DVD Audio)
Ringo is the one of those musicians which are... absolutely sterile. His works do not excite gripe but admiration too. It's just good while you're listening to it but you absolutely cannot remember any melody after you powered you cd off.
This Ringo CD is made in respect for his contract with audiophile label 'KOCH', seems like our Starr had a 4-album contract with them and he tried to complete it as fast as he can with the material he had. Ringorama, Choose love, a Live CD then and now this 5.1 compilation made from Ringorama and Choose Love :-)
This is Double-CD edition which contains:
1. High Fidelity DVD-Audio Disc, with additional DTS track, so don't worry those who haven't DVD-A support in their players.
2. A CD with the same tracks.
3. DVD-A contains short bonus track.
Of course this is 'must miss' for those who doesn't understand anything in 5.1 sound - you have all these songs on previous CDs. Nothing new for you.
If you are an audiophile, this is must-have thing. Of course the music material is not as better as on Ringo or even Vertical Man, as I've said, you won't remember any melody after power off, but otherwise, these songs are pretty old style rock'n'roll and they are complete joyfull to listen to! Also, KOCH men did their job as noone do: the record quality is amazing, very clear acoustic guitars, very juicy sound, which will be wanted to be listened again and again!
To the multichannel mix, it's comfort and good. But nothing is innovative and amazing. Just good. Some effects in the rears, good division of instruments in the fronts. No 'synthetic-only-center-channel' voice.
This is seems to be the first DVD-A from any of ex-Beatle for the masses.
McCartney published 'Venus and Mars' and 'Band on the Run' some time ago, with the awful sound and strange songs substitution. These are out of stock and are very hard to find in any way. Also McCartney Years contains 5.1 mixes, but this is of course far from 'Album' concept.
John Lennon - The Best in the way of video clips contain 5.1 DTS mixes...

Now Ringo.
What's next, guys?
