5.0 out of 5 stars I Was There!
This Show Documents Ringo's August 23, 2001 show at the Rosemont Theatre in Chicago. I had the pleasure of joining Richard Starkey, M.B.E. on this most stormy night. Almost all of the songs performed that night are here, except for Ringo's "Boys", "It Don't Come Easy", and "I'm the Greatest", Ian Hunter's "Cleveland Rocks", and...

3.0 out of 5 stars Electic and Electric!
My beloved wife, a die hard "Gen-Xer" and some 17 years younger than I, often has a difficult time understanding why I am so unregenerately, unrepentantly...well, ELITEST about the music and musicians from the Woodstock Generation. And this CD FULLY explains/justifies that opinion. Still..Woodstock Generation musicians and Generation X musicians sharing the same stage and...

This Show Documents Ringo's August 23, 2001 show at the Rosemont Theatre in Chicago. I had the pleasure of joining Richard Starkey, M.B.E. on this most stormy night. Almost all of the songs performed that night are here, except for Ringo's "Boys", "It Don't Come Easy", and "I'm the Greatest", Ian Hunter's "Cleveland Rocks", and "I'm Going to be Someone", Greg Lake's "In the Court of the Crimson King" and "Karnevil No. 9", two songs by Howard Jones, the names of which I cannot remember, and another song by Sheila E, the name of which I cannot remember. What a fantastic show! What a fantastic CD! Although, were I at the helms, this would be a double CD, so that every Ringo song would have gone on. He is the star of the show, after all. Still, King Biscuit was wise to release this gem. Keep up the good work, Ringo!

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 Stars for Ringo and the All - Starr Band, October 3, 2002
This review is from: Ringo & His New All-Starr Band (Audio CD)
I've seen countless live concerts over the years, many of them have been high profile multi-media extravagnzas. Not this one.

Ringo Starr and His All Starr Band have quietly been hitting the road for a number of years, playing small to medium sized venues, with hardly any fanfare.

But what makes these secret little shows so special is the way the entire band comes together and shares each other's music. Ringo doesn't just hit the road and stand in the spotlight. Instead he brings with him a band of friends with a variety of musical backgrounds and they all play and sing together.

If you ever get a chance to catch Ringo and His All-Starr Band in concert... GO! Until then, grab the CDs of the prior shows and enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good, but could have been better, August 17, 2002
This review is from: Ringo & His New All-Starr Band (Audio CD)
I saw the show as it passed through St. Paul (the next show after the one that was recorded for this cd). I had front row center seats, it was outdoors, and a beautiful night. It had been a while since I last saw Ringo; I had seen the first installment of the All-Starr Band in '89, also in St. Paul, as well as Ringo's appearance at the only Farm Aid concert I attended, in 1993, in Iowa. I was especially excited about this show because I hadn't seen any of the performers with Ringo this time 'round, with the exception of Mark Rivera, the sax player, who I had seen with Billy Joel twelve years ago. I've always been a big fan of Supertramp and Emerson, Lake and Palmer and had never seen them, so the fact that each band had a member in the new All-Starr lineup was good news, to say the least. The show itself was wonderful, lasting a little more than two hours. I knew that the show would have been released as a cd eventually, but I was hoping that (for once) the entire show would make it, instead of a truncated version; all of the previous All-Starr cds have been this way--I was hoping for a 2-cd set (I wasn't crazy about the 3-cd "Anthology"; I thought it was sloppily compiled--I would have liked more songs that have not been included on the previous releases, like "No Time" by Burton Cummings and "Up On Cripple Creek" by Levon Helm and Rick Danko). I understand that the casual fan probably wouldn't spring for a 2-cd set, but the hardcore Beatlemaniacs out there, plus people like me who loved the show, definitely would have. Missing songs include Sheila E's "A Love Bizarre", Greg Lake's excellent "Karn Evil 9" (performed as a trio with Howard Jones and Sheila E.), and his surprise performance of the old King Crimson piece "In the Court of the Crimson King", Ian Hunter performing "Cleveland Rocks" (he mistakenly shouted "Minneapolis rocks!" until miss E., a native of the twin cities, corrected him), and an (to me) unknown ballad, and Jones' exciting performances of "Everlasting Love" and "Things Can Only Get Better". Ringo himself performed "I'm the Greatest" and "It Don't Come Easy", plus the ones released on the disc. I would expect the All-Starr disc to include mostly Ringo, but the songs chosen were also on the majority of the previous releases (I was hoping he would perform stuff like "Wrack My Brain" and "Octopus's Garden", but it was not to be). I know that a DVD of the show is being released on Oct. 1. Hopefully this will be the entire concert.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quite Possibly The Best All-Starr Lineup Ever, August 13, 2005

This CD is delightfully energetic. "Photograph" is very upbeat, and the rest of the performances are played splendidly. Almost all of my Ringo favorites are here, including "Don't Go Where The Road Don't Go," "With a Little Help From My Friends," "Yellow Submarine" and "Back Off Boogaloo." Notably missing: "It Don't Come Easy." But that one's on the DVD of the tour, so all is well. The All-Starr Band is also very strong. "Give A Little Bit" is a highlight. I have never seen Ringo live, but after hearing this and other releases, I hope he comes back soon!

I saw one of the concerts on this tour, so I awaited the release of the CD anxiously. This recording at the Rosemont Ballroom in Chicago is not the full concert, but does preserve excellent individual performances, and captures the enthusiastic interactions between Ringo, the All Starrs and the audience which are always a feature of these tours. The sound engineering is especially good for the soloists' voices. Roger Hodgson's performance in three of his best known compositions from his Supertramp years are performed beautifully-his voice is as appealing as ever with perfect back-up harmonies provided by Howard Jones, and enthusiastic sax solos by Mark Rivera. Howard Jones's "No One Is to Blame" is better than his studio version. Sheila E. performs the only featured drum solo in any of these tours. Ringo's performances are his "standards" for these concerts, but the performances of "Back Off Boogaloo" and "Don't Go Where the Road Don't Go" will get you out of your seat.
Drumheads (Ringo's fans) are already cranking up this CD and reliving the great 2001 tour. Anyone who doesn't have the earlier releases of the All Starrs, or the 3-disc anthology should listen in on the fun.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another entertaining edition, August 7, 2002
By
This review is from: Ringo & His New All-Starr Band (Audio CD)
The Ringo Starr "All Starr Band" tours are generally good fun. You don't expect a lot from a travelling oldies show, yet they're always well-played, well staged and good entertainment.

This one is no different on that level. What's a bit different is that the various members - Sheila E, Greg Lake, Ian Hunter, Howard Jones, Roger Hodgson and Mark Rivera - aren't quite the "big names" that he's had in the past. Their respective contributions are a tad less well-known, for the most part, not being "hitmakers" like past bands. This isn't taking away anything from them, it's just that the non-Ringo material might be less familiar to many people.

I attended the show from which this CD is taken, and had something of the above impression - and recall leaving satisfied, but not as enthused as past shows. So upon getting this CD, I put it on expecting no more than my memories of the show.

Ah...but my recollection must have been faulty. I'm still no more familiar with Jones, Hunter, etc., but this CD is really delightful. The band gels quite well in backing Ringo and themselves up, in a very entusiastic way. The solo spots are great fun, and done with more gusto than most oldies acts muster up. And production-wise, this is probably the best sounding All Starr Band set to date - it just roars out of your speakers.

You can never go wrong with an All Starr Band CD, and this one is more of the same. Great art? Nope. Great fun? You bet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great All Starr Band release, August 6, 2002
This review is from: Ringo & His New All-Starr Band (Audio CD)
This was the tour from 2001, the only one so far that was unrepresented on last years "Anthology" box. It was not only another amazing tour with talented musicians, but historical in that this was the first All Starr Band to feature a female musician. And Sheila E. holds her own, definitely. A must-have cd from the incomparable Ringo, who gets by with a little help from his friends.

"Ringo & His New All-Starr Band" was recorded on August 23, 2001 show at Chicago's Rosemont Theatre; and they were rockin' that night as always! I wish this was a recording of the full concert; but still what we get here is nothing but superb music from Ringo and this extremely talented band. They sound terrific and their rapport with their audience is obvious as I listen to this album. The quality of the sound is very good and I like the artwork, too.

The CD opens with "Photograph;" and they perform this very well. Their sense of timing and their coordination as a band enhances their performance greatly. I love those drums with the guitar work! "Act Naturally" is also a great tune; Ringo and his band do this on faultlessly and it's a highlight of the album. Supertramp's "Logical Song" couldn't have been done any better--a fine cover they do (with Roger Hodgson himself participating) of this classic tune! Howard Jones's "No One Is To Blame" gets the royal treatment from these artists and I love every minute of it just as the crowd did. "Yellow Submarine" is every bit as much fun as it was when it was initially released when Ringo was a Beatle; and I also really like how they do Supertramp's "Give a Little Bit."

"You're Sixteen" was always a favorite Ringo Starr number of mine; Ringo and his peers do this with a lot of energy and it's dynamic in every way! "The No-No Song" and "Back off Boogaloo" are also done to perfection; and "Glamorous Life" has them really making great music!

"I Wanna Be Your Man" is very energetic and they never miss a beat! This tune rocks! "Lucky Man" has some awesome guitar work and there's yet another gem in "Take the Long Way Home;" they cover this with panache and I really like their rendition of this rock ballad.

"All The Young Dudes" is sheer brilliance; and "Don't Go Where the Road Don't Go" is every bit as good. The album ends with Ringo and the band performing "With A Little Help from My Friends;" this outstanding Beatles tune gets a fine treatment and it leaves me wanting more!

I definitely agree with anyone who says they wish this had been released as a full, complete concert with two CDs instead of just this one--this music is all THAT good! Enjoy this as you should!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly Surprised!, August 6, 2002
This review is from: Ringo & His New All-Starr Band (Audio CD)
I have all of the live Ringo All Starr CD releases and quite frankly, I don't listen to them often. I was apprehensive when I heard this was coming out. I thought, "another live CD?" But I went and got it anyway because this particular lineup was GREAT in concert and I was hoping to recapture the magical night when I saw the show. And you know what? IT DOES. The sound quality is amazing and everyone is in great form. And it has all of the Roger Hodgson Supertramp songs, which I thought were the best of the night. Ringo is typical Ringo but he and the band sound really good. Go out and get this CD and have fun. Isn't that what music is all about anyway! Rock On Ringo!!!
