Watch Out, Action Figure Frodo!, June 19, 2007

Think small toddler with wings. This sucker is huge, and can kick any of your other action figures butts. Even Treebeard looks a little scared in the face of this one. Don't have any other action figures to let it wreak havoc with? No worries - this is definately a conversation piece all on its lonesome. The sound is great: loud and a nice quality. The LED lights, however, are a little cheezy. Basically the tuft of fire on his head glows. The glowing is probably enough to amuse a small child, but it lacks a little in majesty. Most surprising about the figure is the center of balance. When I first started putting the pieces together (legs, chest, tail and wings) I wondered how on earth it would ever stand on its own with wings wider than it was tall. But thankfully NECA thought it through and, like a real toddler, can be made to stand all by itself. If you have the room, this figure is definately a winner. It definately beats the old school one from Toy Vault!

Too big and too fragile, October 17, 2007

Although the plastic feels high-grade, within 10 minutes a leg joint was broken. Since the leg gave way, it kept falling until a wing joint broke as well. To be honest, even if it hadn't broken, the Balroq still would have moved into the basement. This isn't a toy. It's a statue. It's too big for any child to play with.

A Balrog is come...., October 20, 2008

This is a great collectible. Very realistic, and very well designed, including realistic Balrog sound and flashing fire mane. Take caution, however--it isn't a toy (but then who'd pay this much for an action figure intending to PLAY with it?). This is the pinnacle for LOTR action figure collectors. I have a LOTR themed room, and this figure goes on the floor with Gandalf. There's no "shelf" big enough to hold it. There's only on word to properly describe it. Cool.
