5.0 out of 5 stars Watch Out, Action Figure Frodo!
Think small toddler with wings. This sucker is huge, and can kick any of your other action figures butts. Even Treebeard looks a little scared in the face of this one. Don't have any other action figures to let it wreak havoc with? No worries - this is definately a conversation piece all on its lonesome.

1.0 out of 5 stars Too big and too fragile
Although the plastic feels high-grade, within 10 minutes a leg joint was broken. Since the leg gave way, it kept falling until a wing joint broke as well. To be honest, even if it hadn't broken, the Balroq still would have moved into the basement. This isn't a toy. It's a statue. It's too big for any child to play with.

The sound is great: loud and a nice quality. The LED lights, however, are a little cheezy. Basically the tuft of fire on his head glows. The glowing is probably enough to amuse a small child, but it lacks a little in majesty.

Most surprising about the figure is the center of balance. When I first started putting the pieces together (legs, chest, tail and wings) I wondered how on earth it would ever stand on its own with wings wider than it was tall. But thankfully NECA thought it through and, like a real toddler, can be made to stand all by itself.

If you have the room, this figure is definately a winner. It definately beats the old school one from Toy Vault!

This is a great collectible. Very realistic, and very well designed, including realistic Balrog sound and flashing fire mane.

Take caution, however--it isn't a toy (but then who'd pay this much for an action figure intending to PLAY with it?). This is the pinnacle for LOTR action figure collectors. I have a LOTR themed room, and this figure goes on the floor with Gandalf. There's no "shelf" big enough to hold it. There's only on word to properly describe it.

Cool.

Absolutely stunning Balrog statue. With the wings attached it is actually around 26" tall. Assembly was a bit difficult at first but after looking over the short instructions I didn't find a problem with it. The fire lasso isn't that great. Nothing like what is shown on the picture. I just use the fire sword but it's a bit difficult to keep it in the right position in the right hand of Balrog. Overall, it's a great product (definitely not a toy but for collectors) and worth the price.

4.0 out of 5 stars B-I-G, April 3, 2007

The only way to describe this toy is "huge". The sculpt is excellent, the accessories are well crafted, the articulation is suprisingly good, and the light up flames on the back are fun - but the first impression it gives is that it is gi'normous. As much as i love this toy, i had to put it back in its equally massive box and store it away because it won't fit on any shelf - it sat on my pool table for a few days, but that wasn't going to work. Nevertheless, it is a fantastic toy that is to scale with the 6" LOTR figures. It was unexpected to see the coolest celluloid monster ever created into a scale action figure. If i was 9 years old again, i would have gone gaga over this and played with it every day (if i could ever lift it)

As others noted, this is best used as a statue (not a toy), high up on a shelf, overlooking a room. Be sure to have plenty of space.

The roar and flashing lights could only impress a toddler. There is an on-off button, which makes little sense considering it doesn't do anything in the 'on' position unless you press the button on its back to activate the lights and sound. NECA missed an opportunity to make this cooler by having more than just the fire atop its head light up. It would have been great if more parts of it illuminated, such as the face, and didn't just blink several times as it roared.

Also, because of the moving joints, depending on the angle you can see through certain parts, which looks strange. When his torso isn't centered it doesn't look right at all, so I don't know why they made that part move. There's also gaps in the lower parts of the wings which look odd, though those parts aren't flexible.

As others have noted, this is basically to scale with the Toy Biz figures, so be sure to get yourself a Lord of the Rings Two Towers Talking Balrog Battle Gandalf Action Figure to fight this beast.

UPDATE: This thing is not that durable. The tail snapped off under it's own weight. I'm sure I can make it work again somehow but when plastic pieces start snapping, it's never a good thing.

UPDATE 2: It toppled over again, and another piece broke off. If you want a Balrog for display, go with something from Sideshow Collectibles, not this.
