Book Description

June 1996
Published to accompany an exhibition at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, which was part of the city's 1996 Olympic Games Arts Festival, this volume brings together an assemblage of art works from around the world which represent the five interlocking passions of love, anguish, awe, triumph and joy. The book explores the power of art to evoke fundamental human emotions, by juxtaposing works by European masters with treasures from around the world - many of them seldom seen or little-known outside their country of origin. The 129 works include pieces by Rembrandt, Titian, Caravaggio, Van Gogh and Picasso, as well as a Persian manuscript illumination, spirit figures from Polynesia, Japan and Africa, a Byzantine icon, a Nigerian bronze relief, and a Greek trophy amphora showing an athlete crowned by Victory.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Brown, former director of the National Gallery of Art, has selected 129 masterpieces from 39 countries to be arranged according to their expression of five emotions?love, anguish, awe, triumph, and joy?which Brown argues are shared by all humanity across time and cultures. These works comprise the exhibition held at Atlanta's High Museum during the Olympics. From Rodin's "The Kiss" (strategically placed on the cover) to many lesser-known but high-quality pieces from every continent, each object receives a full-page color plate (quality varies) and a large-type, one-page discussion by a knowledgeable author. The exhibition is probably aesthetically satisfying. Ultimately, though, the book is bland and so diverse as to be amorphous. Not an essential purchase. 5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Collection of Art, June 17, 2000
By
Rings is a wonderful compilation of art and artists in an incredibly unique collection. Each piece is discussed in order to help readers understand these contributions to the artistic world. This book is informative, asthetic and well worth the wait. I was fortunate enough to visit the exhibit in Atlanta and this is an incredible keepsake to remember it by.

Great book to showcase this amazing exhibit. I always regretted not getting this book while in Atlanta, and now, all these years later, it's great to look and read through everything I saw. Extremely throrough, a great comprehensive guide to the entire exhibit.
