I have owned and listened to this remarkable set of cassette tapes, produced by "The Mind's Eye," since this version first became available in 1992. It's a terrific audio performance of The Lord of the Rings, adapted by Bernard Mays and featuring Ray Reinhardt as Bilbo Baggins.

Other performers include James Arrington as Frodo Baggins and Saruman; Pat Franklyn as Merry; Mac McCaddon as Pippin; Lou Bliss as Sam; Bernard Mayes as Gandalf and Tom Bombadil; Erik Bauersfeld as Theoden and Boromir; John Vickery as Legolas and Wormtongue; Karen Hurley as Eowyn; Bob Lewis as Wildman; Matthew Loericchio as Eomer; Tom Luce as Denethor and Strider/Aragorn; John Vickery as Sauron, and; Gail Chugg as Gimli, Gollum, and as the narrator.

The tapes (each nicely packaged in its own case) of course individually have an "A" Side and a "B" Side, and each side plays for about 30 minutes. So the entire program runs roughly twelve hours total time.

This "The Lord of the Rings" audio version was originally developed for broadcast on BBC Radio. The actors pull off a real coup with tons of story details included such as the Tom Bombadil encounter which even got cut from the special extended edition version of Peter Jackson's three renowned films:
