This review is from: Rings: Very Best of (Audio CD)
Cymarron was comprised of three very successful songwriters from Memphis, Tennessee in 1971. Although their band career only lasted two years, they debuted with a remarkably catchy love song called, "Rings", which has been covered a few times. It was a big hit the summer of 1971. This was followed by three more singles, but none reached the Top 20 status of "Rings". The sound is a mix of "Crosby, Stills and Nash" and "America", with its folksy rock rhythm and beat. This album also covers the Bee Gees, "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart?" in a guardedly close manner. The original album contained 11 tracks and this collection adds 5 more tracks, containing their two last singles. This album is newly released rarity collection from "Collectables" which contains tons of great oldies material.

I had to have this CD for my collection. With songs like "Rings," "Like Children" and even "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" from Bee Gee's fame, it seemed like a must have. In hearing this CD, I am reminded of some of the great songs of the 70's as well as groups worth remembering and listening to. When listening to Cymarron, I realized how much I enjoyed their music and was happy to hear it again. I like the country rock feel of this album.

The main attraction Rings: The Very Best of Cymarron was the hit single by this band, mid '71, though several other songs are worthwhile. Their copy of, "How Do You Mend Broken Heart" sounds much like Andy Gibb, due to the natural voice similarity. Other songs sound a lot like John Lennon, or Graham Nash. The hit tune, "Rings," is surprisingly well written and orchestrated, with xylophone, drums, keyboard, violin, and sparse electrical guitar. The mention of several common rings is the basis for the song, "voices ring, with a happy tune anyone can be a singer," and it is hard to get out of your head. That may explain why it is still played today on some radio. The album is definitely worth the modest price.
