ive gone from first just liking this record to thinking its one of the best. the interplay of the band is superb. with the rhythm section taking affifs soloing ideas and playing them back. after 1 and a half years of this album lying around,it got played after i exhausted my old guitar hero records. im tellin ya. right now its kenny burrell and this guy. if you listen hard and catch this guys notes, you go for a ride.

Lean and Mean!! Virtuoso..,

This is a fairly straight ahead live jazz guitar sound, but v tasteful. V enjoyable.
If you like Jimmy Bruno, Kenny Burrell etc, then you'll love Ron. He's got the chops, and the soul, and he's well supported by v talented bass and drums. He plays some standards, and a few of his own. Highly recommended. *****

Being a little dimwitted, it verrry slowly dawned on me that Affif was paying tribute to his father and also making a statement about jazz guitar. You can't blame me though, because I've been too busy listening to this disc, so I haven't had a lot of mental free time to think about metaphors. I know this probably reads like I just suffered a mild stroke, but my point is that this is album is a monster. I can say, however, (thanks high school writing class!) that I definitely feel Affif's swinging, no pun intended, on the first song. A note of caution: the first track may melt the CD into your player tray. I think I may have suffered a mild stroke when I heard this, because my initial response was a long string of incredulous profanities. This is a killer trio set, and they are all heavyweights, no pun intended. I beat the metaphor to death, and I have this CD in a short stack by my CD player in my pile of "Favorite Recordings Of All Time". This session is almost "gladiatorial"..not even sure that's a word.
In summary, if you sometimes ask yourself "Are there any killer live jazz guitar sets available on disc that will melt my eyeballs?", then the answer is contained herein. It has gained a slot in the short pile alongside my Grant Green, Joe Pass, Wes, and Sean McGowan. Buy it. Know it. Love it. Now somebody in the record business get Ron Anthony a contract already!
