This review is from: Ringstones and Other Curious Tales (Hardcover)
A young girl takes a summer job caring for some rather odd children in an isolated old house in the North of England and then...The everyday world of Sarban's characters is itself a little strange to 21st century American readers. It's Britain the 40's and 50's. His characters step inadvertently from it into nightmare worlds. He skirts the boundaries of S&M pornography without ever quite crossing. His characters remain virginal and there is no splatterpunk. In this one the buildup is slow and insidious and you have to tolerate a story-within-a-story with digressions and feeble jokes until the tension builds up to the weirdly fascinating climax. Incidentally this Ballantiyne paperback, the one pictured by amazon, only contains "Ringstones." He also wrote "The Sound of His Horn" and "The Dollmaker". I don't know of any short stories by him. |
