Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2-- Davis sets her whole story in rhyme and turns out a wonderful concoction, deliciously flavored with Sandford's colorful illustrations. On Thanksgiving Day, one well-dressed Piggy La Puffin walks into the Rinky- dink Cafe and sees their sign, "We make dinners to order." One after another she asks for and devours a huge amount of very special orders. "Do you have apples and steaming mince pies that were baked by a child who can cross both his eyes?" Sandford's art deco restaurant is a treat in itself, a cross between off-beat and highly ordered. Piggy's foils are a long-necked swan as the waitress and a hulking buffalo as the cook. Many pictures burst from their frames to heighten the action. Eventually things come to a head, and Piggy good-naturedly fixes dinner and cleans up. As she promises to return next year, the last picture shows the swan and buffalo barricading the door. Thoroughly enjoyable on its own as a story, this could also be used as a spark for a discussion on feelings and reactions to unreasonable demands. --Judith Gloyer, Milwaukee Public Library

The Rinky Dink Cafe was one of my favorites growing up. As an elementary school teacher, I read it to my students every year around Thanksgiving. We all enjoy the language, pictures, and light hearted story.

I was given this book when my eldest was a baby, and he is now 20. He still loves the book. I can recite most of it I have read it so often, but it is the most charming children's book, with silly and wonderful rhymes about an outrageous Thanksgiving day meal. We try to remember to read it at Thanksgiving, and are happy to have the memories of the telling of it over and over. Beautifully illustrated. I highly recommend it. ...into the Rinky Dink Cafe marched Piggy LaPuffin on Thanksgiving Day. Cook waived from the kitchen, waitress did too. " Come in." they cried sweetly, "we're tasting a stew."--or at least I think that's how it starts. Best!!
