5.0 out of 5 stars A Happy Discovery
I've only begun to explore the realm of Brazilian music, but once I moved beyond Astrud and Bebel Gilberto, Ana Caram was a wonderful discovery. This young protege' of Antonio Carlos Jobim has a smooth, breezy, bird-like voice, singing in either Portuguese or pleasantly accented English. She is accompanied on this CD by a talented combo including Jobim, and Paquito...

3.0 out of 5 stars somewhat disappointing performance
While Ana has a wonderful voice and the production/recording quality are first rate, the program selection was disappointing. Many of the Brazilian tunes are translated to English and loose much of their original poetry. This was Anna's first recording and it shows. Pick up Amazonia or other later releases if you enjoy good Brazilian music, you won't be disappointed...

This young protege' of Antonio Carlos Jobim has a smooth, breezy, bird-like voice, singing in either Portuguese or pleasantly accented English. She is accompanied on this CD by a talented combo including Jobim, and Paquito D'Rivera. This is a soft and romantic collection of numbers that will transport you to a warm tropical night in a quiet cafe'. I highly recommend it as an introduction to this delightful singer.

Rio after dark is one of my favorite Bossa Nova albums. Being a huge fan of Bossa Nova I would consider this a masterpiece. The sounds are soothing as Bossa Nova should be. If your not a fan of Bossa Nova you will be after listening to this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Start......., June 23, 2007

This was Ana Caram's initial effort for Chesky Records back in 1989. And a wonderful effort it is! Mixing English with Portugese, and singing the music of several composers, ranging from herself to Antonio Carlos Jobim to Carole King, she gives us a thoroughly charming album. Ana's voice has something of a "little girl" quality, but this is no child; she was already past 30.

Chesky Records needs no introduction: prefect technique, sound and engineering. They, along with Reference Recordings, establish the "gold standard" of the recording art. This is one of several Latin Jazz albums they've done, but their catalog ranges from Bach to Blues, and all points in between--and all done to the same high standard.

This superbly enjoyable album whetted our desire for more of the same; we know now that it was only the first of several great listening experiences. Word of warning; Chesky Records are great, but not easy to find. Grab this when you have the chance.
