Caylus Magna Carta is the card game version of the more famous board game Caylus. It's a worker placement game, where you place your workers on various cards to produce wooden, stone, food and gold, with the players competing to build a castle for the king. It's definitely lighter than Caylus, but still has a lot of strategic decisions to keep player entertained. The cards are nice because they ensure that each game starts with a different selection of buildings, helping to keep the gameplay fresh. They even have a beginner and an advanced version, which makes it easier to introduce the game to new players. There have been a bunch of worker placement eurogames released in the last few years, but Caylus Magna Carta is a good choice for gamers new to the genre and fans of Caylus looking for something easier and more portable.

Lots of work to learn, not a lot of fun,

Played this once and will probably not play it again. The directions are poorly written with some term inconsistencies and some hunting required for essential information, which made the setup and understanding of instructions difficult even for seasoned gamers like us. Once we figured it out, making a few mistakes along the way (to be expected the first time), it just wasn't much fun. Each turn seemed repetitive, with very few surprises. It also seemed difficult to earn enough "stuff" to bring the more advanced cards into play. Color consistency between the cards, pieces, and instructions is a big problem when starting the game. (How does hot pink equal purple?) We played this with two players. Maybe it's more fun with more people?

The strategy game is pretty well balanced. I played the more complex version, and it was pretty fun. I haven't had a chance to play this one yet.
