Product Description

In the first Cartagena game, the players, as pirates, attempted to flee prison by making their way through a tunnel to a boat waiting for them at the end of the tunnel. But simply reaching the boat does not mean they have escaped as re-capture is always possible, perhaps, even likely. They will not be really safe until they reach their Pirate's Nest on Tortuga. Each player leads a group of pirates to Pirate's Nest on Tortuga. The path leads the pirates through wild jungle and across the waters of open ocean to the island of Tortuga. In addition to the innate perils of the trip are the other pirates, as each group wants to be the first to arrive at Pirate's Nest and will do what they can to slow the others' progress. As soon as one player has all his pirates in Pirate's Nest, he can raise the Jolly Roger and win the game.

The original Cartagena game board consists of five interchangeable pieces that form a path with different symbols. You draw from a deck of cards with those same symbols and move a group of six pirates along the path to reach your destination i.e. escape the pirates from a prison to the boat. As simple as it sounds, the rules on how to draw a card and how many pirates can be on each spot at the same time call for the use of different strategies - making the game very interesting and a lot of fun. The game takes only 15-20 minutes (5 players).

In Cartagena 2, the only difference is that you build two islands (3 + 2 pieces) and put the boat in between them. You move the pirates through the first island to the boat and then through the second island to the pirate heaven. If you already have Cartagena I, you could essentially play Cartagena II by assembling the pieces differently and following the new rules (Rule book downloaded from Rio Grande website).

Nevertheless, the symbols and the board design are different between Cartagena I and II. So, if you are a fan, you may want to get it.

this game is fun and it is simple; there is some strategy involved. We play it just while dinner is in the oven and you have about 20 minutes to relax together with your spouse. The game is flawed in that the end game is predictable and fated. The components are really sturdy and pretty too.

Cartagena 1 was super enjoyable. This is a great version to have. You can play the new rules, which are more intense but add more strategic value then the first or play buy the old rules. They don't have the old rules so you'll have to look them up online but if you're like me, why buy two when you can buy one.

Excellent little game. Easy to teach and learn and takes about 30 minutes to play. It doesn't take any longer to play if you play with two people or five people. Not an intense strategy board game, but still quite fun.
You could play this with younger kids too, probably ages 7 and up would be appropriate.
