This review is from: Rio Modern Spey Casting DVD 240 Minutes/ DVD Video (Misc.)
This is an excellent video. Simon Gawesworth grew up Spey casting in Scotland, and to watch him cast is pure poetry. "Modern Spey Casting" is thorough in its presentation, focused on the steep learning curve to becoming accomplished at this venerable fly-fishing tradition. In addition to Gawesworth it features Dana Sturn, Ed Ward, George Cook. Mike McCune, and Scott O'Donnell. I only hope that Rio will release an expanded 2nd edition of this video which adds Mike Kinney, and a couple of younger stars like Josh Linn, Marcy Stone, or Travis Johnson. The addition of a woman would be welcome to the growing number of female Spey fishermen out there. But there is plenty to learn from the fine group of instructors featured in this 3 Disc set; good coverage of a wide arsenal of Spey casts like the single Spey, double Spey, circle Spey, snap Tee, Perry poke, snake roll, and others, as well as differences in traditional long belly vs. more modern Skagit and Scandinavian techniques. Unlike so many casting videos out there on UTube, the music in this set is pleasant and appropriate--traditional Celtic: bagpipe, penny whistle, etc., though I did find myself muting the penny whistle segments after a bit. At least it doesn't blast your ears off with loud rock or canned, repetitive computer "music," that detracts from peaceful river settings. In sum, I doubt there is a better Spey casting video out there--anywhere.

I'm looking to get into spey casting. This DVD is very good. Combined with his book it really helps understand the basics without being on the water. Only wish there was more about equipment such as switch rods, various lines, shooting heads and such.

I've seen a number of Casting videos and most are informative but have issues. This was the best of them I've seen and the reason is Simon. He is just good on camera and easy to understand. The camera angles and clarity were good. I was watching this on a 56" screen so a HD version would have been nice, but the video is a few years old at this point so no points off for that. I really liked the visual glossary and the "Faults" section of each cast chapter. I'm not sure the bio kinetics adds much, but seeing the cast from every angle is helpful.A chart of the various casts by anchor type, wind direction, condition, best use, line type, etc.. would be a nice addition. I just got Simon's One Handed Spey casting book for my new Kindle Fire, perhaps I'll find it in there. Single-Handed Spey Casting: Solutions to Casts, Obstructions, Tight Spots, and Other Casting Challenges of Real-Life Fishing
