4.0 out of 5 stars good deal for the money
I bought this for my toddler to watch on a long multi-leg plane ride. The only reason I am not giving it 5 stars is it is hard to figure out how set the timer and record programs. The battery life is excellent, the picture is fine and if you fill it up with blues clues and elmo, it keeps a toddler's attention! The sound quality isn't great but I wasn't expecting it to be...

3.0 out of 5 stars OK for recording live tv but....
I have purchased Riproar as a PVR. It is OK to record shows but sometimes it will not record and it tells me memory is full but it is not. Also my TV needs 3 digit channel changing code this thing only sends 2 digits if only 2 are required. For example to enter channel 25 you have to enter 025 on my TV but this thing only sends 25 and there is no way to change this. Also...

The sound quality isn't great but I wasn't expecting it to be. The actual device itself doesn't look very durable so I wouldn't throw it around. It does have a keypad lock and easy to navigate menu. I paid $48 for this from another giant retailer and another $25 for a 1gb SD card so it will hold about 6 or so hours of video (maybe more) and the battery lasted more the double what it says it will. For that price, it was a fantastic purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it, January 6, 2007

I bought each of my teens one for Christmas, and all of their friends want to know where they got them! My daughter put movies on hers. My son put videos from the internet on his. They are durable, portable, easy to use, and worth every penny! I bought them from another store and they were listed as a toy. In my opinion, these are more like DVRs. The conversion software for the computer is included and is very easy to use. It has approximately 2 hours of memory already built in, but the memory may be increased with an optional memory card. The battery lasts for a very long time. The screen is 2.5", the same size as a video ipod. It comes with headphones, but also has built in speakers. The picture is excellent. The sound is ok. It has a lock switch on it to lock all the key functions. The menu is easy to navigate. We have not tried to record any tv programs yet. We like this product and many friends and family are scrambling to find one for themselves!

For example to enter channel 25 you have to enter 025 on my TV but this thing only sends 25 and there is no way to change this. Also it comes with only one video audio cable so you can only get the signal in but not out. Riproar is OK for a toy but if you want to use it to record a scheduled TV show it is not that good. If you want to have PVR buy something else.

This is a great mini recorder. You can download movies and TV shows with little effort. You can expand the memory with SD cards. My 6 year old loves as does the older one who is 42 yrs old.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Pocket-fit Portable DVR, September 8, 2008

I've had this product for a year or so now. It's one of the best technilogical devices I own for the following reasons:

1. You can record right from your cable box then transfer your videos to your computer using the usb and vice versa.

2. It holds up to 512mb which is good for a couple hours of videos and/or music, but it wouldn't hurt to buy an SD card for about 4-6 hours more.

3. The cradle let's you set a timer so that it can record your shows on its own.

4. The lock is good so that it doesn't turn on by itself while in your bag or pocket, which will prevent battery waste.

Here are some tips for new/frustrated users:

1. The battery lasts really long so when you charge it, don't charge it for more than 5 hours (this is recommended by the company) or else it will be overcharged and will not turn on. If you overcharged your device, wait a few hours and charge again.

2. After recording one segment without using the cradle, you must turn off the device and turn it back on. If you try to record another segment right after another, you will get a static-like line on your screen.

3. To transfer video files over to your device, you have to use the software disk to convert your files to the device's format.

4. To convert your recorded video files to viewable files on sites like youtube, try using Windows Movie Maker

There are some ups and downd to this thing, but overall it's great! Like most new technology, you need to play around with it first and soon enough you'll get the hang of it.

1.0 out of 5 stars died out of the box, May 29, 2007
= Durability:1.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:1.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Rip Roar - Video Free MPEG Player (Toy)
The player died after playing it the first time. I followed all the instructions and left it for charging on the cradle overnight. Next day, it did not even start. The cradle worked fine and showed the right time but the player did not start at all - no sign of life. I am an engineer and know a lot about electronics; and the player is no rocket science to mess up its functioning. So I am sure it was defective.

I have already returned it after getting it 4 days back. I think they were selling it for cheap as it might have been refurbished or something.

Also, the video quality is very bad if you play any recorded program on TV. The sound quality is very bad too despite changing it to the best possible value (48kHz).

I have a feeling that the player does not have any overcharge protection and one has to take it off the cradle once it has charged. This somewhat defeats the purpose as it can not record till it is on the cradle. They only include one set of A/V cables and I dont think you can use any A/V cables with this player so you will have to change the cable connection everytime you want to record or play.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great product for the price!!!!!, January 9, 2007

I saw this on clearance from a major retailer for $0.00 and thought it was a great deal, then I saw it two days later for $0.00 so I bought another one. I bought it for my husband for Christmas even though it is marketed to teens. My husband had been asking for a TIVO or a video Ipod for Christmas and then I saw this and realized that the Riproar is the perfect combination of both. On the Riproar website it states that the unit is expandable to 1GB of additional memory, but we are using a 2GB card(for $0.00 extra) and it works perfectly. This unit does all that it says and is very comparable to items out there that cost $0.00. My husband loves his Riproar and loves being able to put television shows, movies, music, and pictures of our children on it.

I hooked this up today as I thought of getting another one with the new price reduction....for a gift

I hooked it up properly ....saw the screen for a split second twice and that's it. I checked the trouble shooter guide. I am into electronics a bit as well.

I went by the previous reviews. Perhaps I got a defective one. Was new from the box however.
