4.0 out of 5 stars Good Electric Jazz, November 29, 2011
This review is from: Ripe (Audio CD)
This guy can sure play guitar and this trio with Vic Stevens on drums and Chico Huff on bass is tight. Excellent keyboards on a couple tracks and awesome guitar throughout. "Skwerbie" includes some great keyboard work and is a classic fusion tune. "Industrial Blowout" and "Ong's Hat" remind me a little of classic Tony Williams Lifetime. "Marcella" is an acoustic guitar piece and quite well played.

I would compare him in style to Alan Holdsworth or Scott Henderson. Mostly tight jazz guitar trio, but they can and do rock out a couple of good fusion tunes as well. There is just something missing here from making it a great album, but it sure is a good one. I give it a light 4 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Scott McGill's Hand Farm - Outstanding Jazz Fusion Prog, May 3, 2007

Scott McGill is a guitarist's guitarist who is probably best known for his work with McGill Manring and Stevens. Vic Stevens also appears in the Hand Farm. Not being all that big a fan of this style of music, I am not sure really with whom McGill compares. Pat Metheny comes to mind as a possible musical compatriot and I am sure there are others of which I am not familiar. The material on this disc I would regard as an instrumental mix of jazz, fusion and progressive rock. McGill is incredible on the guitar and has to be one of the more overlooked fret masters in the country today. The band is all top notch as well. Vic Stevens on drums and Chico Huff on base form the core Hand Farm band with additional keyboard assistance from Demetrios Pappas on several tracks. The album is pretty mellow for the most part, but McGill and crew do manage to tear it up on several tracks. The bottom line is if you like really, really well done fusion-ish guitar this album should be right up your alley. I have had the chance to meet McGill on several occasions and is also qualifies as one of the nicer guys in the biz as well.
