Ripe for Seduction is a book of two romances interwoven into one book. Though the story begins with the main characters, it is the secondary romance that actually captures the reader's heart and attention.

The main heroine is a woman who takes what would be considered an insulting proposition and turns it into her gain. The hero is forced to masquerade as her willing faux-fiance as she navigates the society of the Ton, trying to recapture a semblance of respect and normalcy after the shocking end to her marriage. They turn what was otherwise a drunken wager into an affair of the heart and there is little doubt by the middle of the book that they will be together if they only allowed themselves to acknowledge their feelings. There is also a "bad guy", but his motives and ultimate failure are very predictable and add little to the story other than for a bit of conflict.

There is a concurrent romance between the heroine's father and the hero's sister which is the more passionate of the two relationships. These two characters are mature adults who have each been married before and find an instant attraction to each other that they pursue. Neither of them intended for deep feelings to be involved, but they quickly find themselves compatible on many levels and it takes some wooing from the heroine's father to convince the hero's sister that she should give up her hard-won freedom in order to marry him.

It took me a little while to wrap my mind around the final familial relationships as with their marriages, the heroine's father became both the brother-in-law and father-in-law to the hero and the heroine gained a sister-in-law and stepmother.

I went ahead and purchased this book due to the excellent reviews posted, however unfortunately for me, I did not feel it was all that good.

This story is about a woman (lady Olivia Carlow) that was scandalized for having been involved in a bigamist marriage and was pretty much shunned from elite society. Once her bigamist marriage is dissolved, she has no choice but to go back home to live with her widowed father, Phillip Carlow, The Earl of Arlington. She apparently receives a written letter from our hero, Roland Devere that is pretty much advising her of his erotic fantasies and desires to engage in carnal activities while under a heavily drunken state. Lady Olivia becomes astute and decides to turn the tables on Roland to her advantage by striking a bargain with him in that they are to pose as a romantically engaged couple. He accepts the challenge with the hopes of bedding Lady Olivia. From this point on, I feel that the story lacked substance and intrigue for the following reasons:

1. The story moved a very slow pace with our infamous couple going to house parties and Roland seeking the opportunity to be alone with Olivia and seduce her. No real imminent danger or threat is embedded in the story. Sure, Olivia has a male cousin which is the sole heir of the Earl and he makes sure that Olivia and the Earl are further scandalized by stating that he had an affair with the Earl's mistress; this mistress happens to be Roland's sister that has returned from France and is apparently rumored to have been in many beds herself. This male cousin (I think his name was Henry) also claimed that Roland was keeping a mistress behind Olivia's back in order to throw his wrench at that relationship as well.

RIPE FOR SEDUCTION by Isobel Carr is a wonderful Regency Historical Romance. #3 in "The League of Second Sons",but can be read as a stand alone.

"The League of Second Sons
A secret society of younger sons, sworn to aid and abet each other, no matter the scandal or cost . . ."

Filled with passion, scandal, trust, secrets,a wager, second chances,a scheme or two,a bit of danger, and love. Two interweaving stories of the love of a father, and the love of a sister for her brother. Margo (Devere's sister) and Philip (Olivia's Father)may be able to find a second chance in love too.Lady Olivia Carlow, after a disastrous marriage,Lady Olivia must become betrothed to stop some of the rakes seeking her flavors. Roland Devere,a second son,a scandalous rake, and is determined to be the first in Olivia's bed. But,things do not always happen as you want. An interesting plot with strong characters that will surely capture your heart. A great read. Ms. Carr is a great storyteller. Received for an honest review from the publisher and Net Galley.

Ripe for Seduction is the third book in The League of Second Sons series. I have not read the others yet, but I did not feel as if there were any gaps in the story. It can be read as a stand-alone book. Overall, it's a fantastic historical romance filled with great characters, a flowing storyline and a different spin on the usual ruined woman/widowed woman storyline. The dual romances and their great chemisty were a fantastic addition to this story.
