About the Author

Robert Ripley, founder of the world famous Ripley’s Believe It or Not! cartoon strip, books, museums, and radio and TV shows, traveled to more than 200 different countries in his lifetime, in a relentless quest for odd people, places, and things. From humble origins in turn of the century California, he became one of the best known and most successful Americans of his generation. His own travels were recorded in newspaper columns that were read around the world, and, as shown in this book, provide a fascinating insight into a time when such journeys were highly unusual, magical and mysterious.

As a kid, I obtained (from somewhere) a first edition (soft cover) copy of this title, which I read and re-read until the tattered pages began to fall out, spellbound by Ripley's unbelievable entries and his personally sketched renditions. On the road to adulthood, I somehow managed to lose my book, glad to find it in print again (hard cover with original artwork dust cover a bonus). While subsequent Ripley editions are good and their entries equally fascinating, none can replace Ripley's first, original work, most especially from my nostalgic point of view, fondly recalling stolen moments beneath my quilt while using a flashlight to read by, oftentimes awed and sometimes shocked by Ripley's wide travels and amazing research. Living less than an hour from a Ripley's Believe It Or Not! Museum, seems my granddaughter has suddenly developed an interest in Ripley and his unbelievable tales and artifacts, ordering this book for myself as much as for her. Simple arrangement of topics makes for totally delightful reading and discussion.

This is a reissue of the very first Ripley's Believe or Not published in 1929. If you've read Ripley's before you know the format. Robert Ripley was a world traveler and searched for the odd, the bizarre and the horrible but true. Now, be warned Ripely happilly admitted to some attitutes about other cultures and religions that would get your face slapped or a pink slip today. If you can't take it buy one of the newer bowlderdized verisons.

Robert LeRoy Ripley (1890-1949) was a cartoonist and minor-league baseball player when "Ripley's Believe It Or Not" was first published in December of 1918. It was originally called "Champs And Chumps" and concentrated on sports trivia, but an expansion into general trivia caused him to change the name to what it is now in October of 1919. He would eventually become a member of the Hearst empire and loose his last chance at playing pro ball, with the New York Giants, in 1929.

Ripley's empire would eventually give us games, radio shows, television shows, museums, aquariums, movie shorts, comic books, paperbacks, hard covers, omnibuses, spin-offs, and imitators. In fact, Ripley would die right after the May 27, 1949 broadcast of his eighteen year, two to five days a week, radio show.

Future cartoonists Charles L. Shultz ("Peanuts) and Bob Clarke ("Mad Magazine") would get their start on the strip, and his strip was directly influential in getting John Philips Sousa to write "The Star Spangled Banner" as America's anthem. This is an anniversary reprinting of the original first collection of comic strips that was printed in 1929, and would eventually see paperback printing in 1941; ten months before our entry into World War II.

Fifty years ago, my father owned the original of this book, and it was one of his favorites, unfortunately he had a son of sub-par intelligence who decided to color the black and illustrations, and then make some form of primitive origami with the pages afterwards. Yeah, that idiot kid was me, and my Dad spent the next fifty years looking for a used copy of this book.

This is the classic stuff not like today. It is so cool to see the past come back for new generations. To see Ripley's magic back in print will make you feel like a kid again. Give it a shot and bring back some great memories.

I read the original as a kid and still find these stories interesting, maybe more so as our society changes its views

Not a bad book. I always wanted to see what was in the first Ripleys book. Most of it I have already read in other books, but there were a few stories that were new to me. All in all I would recommend this book.
