Slovenly was a unique 80s indie art-rock band with an odd (but sincere) vocalist. Steve Anderson wrote like a Southern California version of Mark E. Smith - his clumsy poetry about idiot culture never seemed like a pose. This album finds him at his least critical, heart wide open, ranting over tunes that approach "catchy". With this band it's easy to miss the excellent music behind the words. Slovenly tried hard (half a dozen records) but in the end they were just too strange for commercial success. I'm glad this album is still in print - it's my favorite.
