Book Description

November 1997
GUNSLINGING AND HISTORICAL DETECTION

Probably the most honored of all current mystery short story writers, Edward D. Hoch combines ingenious plotting with a strong sense of time and place. The Ripper of Storyville is the first book collection of one of Hoch’s most imaginative creations, Ben Snow, the nineteenth century gunman who wanders through the West—and occasionally the East as well. The book begins with seven rare stories about Ben Snow published more than thirty years ago in The Saint Mystery Magazine and continues with seven more recent tales. Ben solves such mysteries as— The steamboat that vanishes as it leaves Vicksburg, Mississippi; The stallion that can be seen only by the victim; Crime in a Sacramento waxworks; The patent medicine man who claims to be able to stop time itself; Serial killings in old New Orleans; A mysterious death near a temple in Yucatan; and The killing of The Flying Man.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Ripper of Storyville, Edward D Hoch, May 8, 2000
By A Customer
This book contains 14 short stories originally written for mystery magazines about gunfighter/detective, Ben Snow, who is continually mistaken for the late Billy the Kid. Each story has a mysterious twist and is usually set in a historical background. Some stories approach being great "impossible" mysteries, but end disappointingly. Others are simply good short mysteries.

5.0 out of 5 stars for Edward D. Hoch fans, June 8, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This selection of short mystery stories is great. For readers who are familiar with Edward D. Hoch's work, this is a wonderful collection. For anyone else, this is an introduction to his clever and well-written work. Hoch uses his imagination and writing talents to produce non-blood and guts stories. They are charming and worth reading and re-reading.

In a way this collection of my first fourteen stories about western detective Ben Snow is really two books in one, so it's only fitting that the introduction is in two parts. Read the first page
