Could Have Been Good, But..., July 9, 2004
This review is from: Ripper [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This movie, honestly, could have been a decent film. But there are a few things that hold it back. The first being that it was shot on tape. So the picture, no matter what grade your copy is, is terrible. Everything looks like a bad TV infomercial, or a home movie. It also makes the picture look rather flat, and bland. Nothing has any life, and because of that, the entire movie feels flat. The second thing holding the movie back is some of the acting. Mostly it was the man who played Richard, and his girlfriend, that I had the biggest problems with. They looked like they really would rather be doing other things than this movie (which I could understand, considering this is a straight to video horror movie). The rest of the cast actually does okay. The girl who plays Steve's girlfriend is really good, and you actually begin to like her character. The actor who plays Steve is alright, and gets better as the movie goes on.
One thing that worked really well with this film was the script. The dialogue didn't sound awkward, and everything worked out. There weren't hours of explaining going on as to who the Ripper was. The give you what you need, and let the story tell itself. It works. The other big plus is Tom Savini. I swear, he owned the part of The Ripper (although he only appears in the last ten minutes of the film). His acting was top notch, and he looked like he was having a total blast. Plus, he actually seemed somewhat scary! And the gore effects were top notch. Everything looked very real, and since it was straight to video, the movie never got chopped up by the censors, so we are treated to some very extreme gore. While the gore is extreme, the violence (the physical act) is actually fairly mild. There is some stabbings, and a few other things, and everyone who dies does get disembowled, but the scenes are hardly violent. There is no fight, and they mostly last for a few seconds. You just get all the gore after he's done doing his deed, and boy is this movie gorey.
If you can handle the horrible video quality, and the somewhat cheesy acting, then maybe you can handle this movie. Give it a try, especially if you want to see some top of the line gore effects.

Rentable not Buyable, November 1, 1999
This review is from: Ripper [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Cheesy filming. Cheesy quality. 1 good twist. I rented thisvideo for a Halloween flick. It was .49 cents @ the local rental store. This almost looks like a Homemade porn flick. Take out the porn and add intestines and blood and more guts and blood and 'poof' you have "The Ripper"
