4.0 out of 5 stars Creative story, Read the Prequel First! January 26, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I'd like to start off by saying that if you're not yet familiar with Ryllann and Wren, then you should read A Raucous Time by Julia Hughes, and then continue on to A Ripple in Time - Angel of the Titanic. Now, on to the topic at hand...

A Ripple in Time starts almost 5 years after A Raucous Time. By a strange sequence of events, Wren dreams of the Titanic. 100 years in the past, a young lady named Carina (a passenger on the Titanic) connects with his dream and foresees the tragic end to her voyage. She manages to warn the crew and the course of history is altered. "HMS Titanic steamed safely into New York Harbour." The world that was is no more.

In the new altered reality, life is different. World War I never ended, because the United States did not enter the conflict. The Great War as it is known rages on, with neither side ever having enough of an advantage to end it. Life is different, centered around conflict. Technology is not as advanced, and Europe has little connection with the rest of the world.

Wren finds himself in the new reality, with full knowledge of his life before. He instinctively knows what happened. Wren is a very intelligent young man, and he often seems to knows things he shouldn't. No real explanation is ever given for this tendency, leaving the reader to assume Wren can read minds or has some other psychic ability. Wren must convince his cousin Rhyllann 1st) who he is - since Wren died years ago in this alternate reality and 2nd) that Ryllann must help him restore a world that Rhyllann doesn't know. Wren also seeks help from Carrie, who happens to be the great-great-granddaughter of Carina.

A Ripple in Time blends history with myth and imagination.

3.0 out of 5 stars delightful time traveling fantasy October 17, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
A Ripple in Time - Angel of the Titanic was a time traveling fantasy. It started off rocky for me, so stick with it. I felt like I was dropped in mid-story and it took me a while to get my bearings. My reward came to fruition quickly, as I embarked on an exciting quest; filled with famous characters, places, events, villains and lovable heroes.

The premises behind the tale started with Wren's dream of the sinking of the Titanic. His dreams became entangled with those of a young girl who lived a hundred years ago. Based on those dreams, her knowledge averted the sinking of the ship. This action altered the course of history. Wren (who no longer existed in his current timeline) had to convince his brother Rhyllann and Carrie, the granddaughter of the young woman from Wren's dreams to help him restore the timeline. The story that unfolded was delightful.

Hughes wove a tale using both fantasy and fact. While there were some errors in her historical references, her knowledge of the subject was apparent. It was highly entertaining the way she brought famous persons throughout history to interact with our heroes. Character development was good, and the romance that developed felt fresh and believable. I found Rhyllann, Wren and Carrie to be enchanting. I cheered this trio on throughout their quest. Hughes tale posed several questions regarding the butterfly effect. The novel emitted many emotions from me and I did get weepy at the end.

I want to thank the author Julia Hughes for sharing this book with me, in exchange for my unbiased review.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Ship of Dreams (Bedtime Reading) January 7, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
A RIPPLE IN TIME ---- Julia Hughes is a kind of doorway to the dream world. Ms Hughes writing craft is at it's most excellant as she takes you by the hand and leads you not only through the English countryside but to the North Atlantic one hundred years ago. If the Titanic was the "Ship of Dreams" then this is "The Book of Dreams". The Must have "read the cover off it" book of 2012.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Thrill Ride Through Time! December 2, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Julia Hughes' debut novel, "A Ripple in Time - Angel of the Titanic" is a wonderful novel with a unique concept. It's not your every day time travel story.

The story begins in the present day with Wren's dreams intertwining with the dreams of Carina, who is a passenger on the Titanic. As a result of this entanglement she learns from Wren's mind what actually happens to the ship she is sailing on. She warns the captain and disaster is averted. Or is it?

The change in the course of history from this ripple in the fabric of time results in a different world that is darker and much less advanced. World War I has never ended and has become a 'cold war'. Women still do not vote and life is hard.

Wren knows that he needs to make things right again. He enlists the help of his cousin Rhyllann and Carrie, who is a descendent of Carina. He shares a special mental bond with Carrie and they grow close along the way.

Once they make it on to the Titanic the difficulty lies in allowing the crash to occur and not changing the original history.

This is truly a fascinating read! I loved the whole concept of the altered reality. The pace and action kept me rooted to the pages. There was a little bit of everything in it. Love, danger, humor and fantasy. Enjoy!

More About the Author

The London born author of the Celtic Cousins' Adventures: A Raucous Time; A Ripple in Time; and An Explosive Time. The Bridle Path, and her latest title is a young adult/crossover action adventure: The Griffin Cryer.

"I'm an eldest child and walking my younger brother and sister to school and back, I'd tell them stories - a captive audience! On leaving college, I worked at the BBC, helping write stories for their "Schools' Programmes". That was back in the day, before satellite telly made it over to the UK and 'Auntie Beeb' ruled the air waves! I gave it all up for the good life, and moved down to Cornwall, one of the most beautiful counties in England, and often known as 'God's own country.' I think the greatest compliment I received was 'Julia's more Cornish than the Cornish.' I picked daffodils in winter and made pasties for the holidaymakers in the summer. But all good things come to an end: I upped sticks to be closer to my family, and landed in a little village just outside London, and have been here ever since, scribbling away at my stories. "
I don't specifically write in any one genre, an idea will flitter into my mind, and the story develops. My first three titles, "A Raucous Time", "A Ripple in Time" and "An Explosive Time" are action adventures, while "The Bridle Path" is romance. I think I'd overdosed on the testosterone flying around in the previous three books and wanted something a little more feminine and romantic.
My latest title "The Griffin Cryer" is an adventure/fantasy. What makes this genre special is the opportunity to really allow imagination to take flight, and even create whole new worlds for readers to explore.
