Book Description

Take a journey into first love, second sight, and soulmates with an uncertain fate.

The stories in Ripples will introduce readers to Laurel and Nate, Heart's Chalice's main characters, as well as other characters important to the novel. For readers who have already read Heart's Chalice, the stories in Ripples will provide an enjoyable supplement to the novel and a unique perspective on the characters.

Most of these stories take place before the main action of Heart's Chalice, Thomma Lyn's magical realism novel. Other stories are woven into the novel's in-between spaces.

4.0 out of 5 stars Part of a larger work November 15, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Ripples, a short story by Thomma Lyn Grindstaff, is part of her novel of magical realism, Heart's Chalice. In the short story we meet Laurel and Nate. They are friends as children in school and each one has his or her own dreams for when they are grown-up. As they grow, they become even better and closer friends, and they help each other through the problems of life.

Laurel has second sight and could see things in a painting that her aunt had done. When Laurel looked at it, she saw different things in the painting that weren't part of the real piece of art. When Laurel and Nate went to a waterfall, the same thing happened. Laurel saw a mist and a completely different experience was in store for her.

The story progresses on to when they are grown and have their own children. The trait of second sight has been passed on. This is magical realism and the first of this genre I have read. I found it interesting, but a bit confusing as to what was going on and where.

For fantasy or sci-fi fans this should be a very enjoyable piece of writing. It is well-written. A cleverly and uniquely plotted story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Insight into more... July 14, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
A well written introduction of sorts into the characters of the main book - which I have yet to read. This is a tantalising piece, whetting the appetite for more. It is intriguing, clever and leaves the reader wanting to find out what may happen to those involved.

Worth a look.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing January 21, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a themed collection of short stories. Basically, it's more of an introduction to various characters from the authors novel Heart's Chalice, which I haven't read yet. I found these stories intriguing and I think this is an innovative and creative way to add something extra to a novel. Readers who have enjoyed the novel will no doubt gain extra insight into the characters by reading these short pieces. And most of the stories are very short, only a page or two. It's a quick and easy read, and it made me curious to want to find out more about these characters and their world. The character Misty Laurel has second sight, something that is inherited, and many of the stories revolve around her visions and the visions of others in her family. I will now be adding Heart's Chalice to my to-read list so that I can find out more about this strange and enchanting fictional world...

More About the Author

I graduated with honors from East Tennessee State University with a Bachelor's Degree in English and worked there for 13 years before becoming a full-time novelist.

I think of myself as an Adventurer Poet. I live near a fabulous network of mountain trails. Part of me is happiest when I'm hiking or scrambling up rocks and through laurel thickets in search of waterfalls. The other part is happiest when I'm at my computer spinning tales or at my piano composing or playing music -- I'm a classically-trained pianist and compose my own songs and instrumental pieces.

My creative life and my adventuring life are equally important. It's about balance. I can't imagine one without the other.

My husband and I have four sweet, spoiled-rotten cats. While I'm working on my writing projects, it's rare that there isn't at least one cat either on my lap or on my computer, often a cat on each.
