More About the Author

Margaret Vodopia Carroll is a native of Queens, New York, and grew up in Commack, Long Island. She earned her BA at The George Washington University and worked on Wall Street for Standard & Poor's and E.F. Hutton before moving into travel. She worked as a trade journalist covering airlines and international luxury travel before joining British Airways as Director of P.R. U.S.A., based in New York with secondments to London and frequent travel overseas. She then joined Starwood Hotels as Director of Advertising & P.R. for the St. Regis and Luxury Collection hotels. She got married and moved to Santa Fe, N.M., where she established a P.R. consultancy that represented some of the area's leading attractions, including the historic La Fonda Hotel on the Plaza. She and her family now reside in Michigan, where she writes fiction in addition to being a full-time mom and homemaker.

"One of the great things about a career in travel is I have so many experiences from which to draw for my books," said Carroll. "I loved every minute of it, even the not-so-glam parts (like the time striking farmers with pitchforks shut down the perimeter of Budapest's airport, so my press fam tour and I had to do the last quarter-mile on foot. lugging our bags through fields and even climbing a fence, all in our Sunday best! I still got us upgraded to business class, by the way). My dream has always been to write fiction, and it's great to have that wealth of experience and memory stored up so I can use it in my thrillers."

What's next? "Definitely more thrillers, heavy on atmosphere and plots with lots of twists and turns."

3.0 out of 5 stars Good writing, but this is no romance!, January 7, 2010

This review is from: Riptide (Mass Market Paperback)
I thoroughly enjoyed Ms. Carroll's writing in Riptide, but to call this book romantic suspense is like saying Lord of the Rings is a children's story. The only sex in the book is violent and deviant in nature--and I don't mean in a good way--and while there are hints of romance among side characters it certainly isn't enough to warrant the tag of romance. The main character is no protagonist, which, while making her very realistic, also makes it difficult to like her. In other words, she's more of a neutral-tagonist, if there were such a word. I suppose, since the R word was used in the genre tag, that I expected a happy ending. At best this is an "oh good, she survived" ending. More than once I shook the book in anger and frustration; that's a sign of good writing, that I was so involved with the story, but boy, did I want better things for the main character.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well-written, page turner, November 3, 2009

This is the second book by Margaret Carroll I've read. I'd call it suspense thriller rather than romance. And what a story! The characters are very believable, the writing is great, and I couldn't put it down. If you're looking for something that'll grab your attention and keep it, this is a good bet. It's a book that doesn't disappoint.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great find, January 12, 2010

I loved this book and the earlier A Dark Love. This new authors' treatment of suspense merits reading all her works.
