5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic overview of the evolution of afterlife beliefs, March 26, 2011
This review is from: The Rise and Fall of the Afterlife (Paperback)
Specifically useful for those seeking to understand the history of afterlife beliefs (at least in the Western tradition). Bremmer introduces classical beliefs of mystery saviors like Orpheus and Pythagoras, who first introduced ideas of post-death reward or punishment (5) while at the same time keeping a firm distance between pagan cults and the Christian doctrine of resurrection. There's a great deal of content in this book regarding spiritual beliefs and practices in the centuries leading up to Christianity.
