Overlong documetary, weak narration, April 7, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Rise and Fall of the Nazi Empire (10 pc Box Set) [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This documentary is a mediocre analysis of the rise and fall of Hitler's empire. It is clearly a product of American propaganda, exalting the American lifestyle in a blatant and obnoxious fashion while focusing on the comparisons of American and German lifestyle. It virtually neglects Hitler's entire western campaign and instead focuses on the Balkans for an entire video, when Hitler's invasion of Yugoslavia was a minor event lasting a matter of weeks. The irksome brown color infused into the film is unnatural and the videos themselves are of low quality. Irrelevant, unfamiliar footage is used from the war and much of it depicts the American strategies and tactics used when we are interested in those employed by the Germans. Leaders such as Himmler, Heydrich, Canaris, Rohm, and even Hitler himself are omitted. The narration is emotional and biased when it should be objective, such as in documentaries like "The World At War" (which I recommend in place of this). This set of videos manages to rehash the usually compelling and fascinating rise and fall of Germany's fascist culture under a spellbinding autocratic leader in a vapid, unappealing, limited manner. A veritable failure of a series. For a masterful view of Hitler and his empire see the three video set, "Hitler: The Whole Story." This will get you your money's worth as opposed to this Americanized propagandist rubbish.
