Editorial Reviews

Review

''Longtime fans of the Belador series will have much to celebrate in the fearless Evalle Kincaid's fourth outing. Kenyon and Love write with such heart and investment, each scene has an intensity that will quicken the pulse and capture the imagination. Because the layers of this complicated plot only grow and develop, new readers would not be advised to start with this book, but the rewards of this constantly evolving series are great, including the promise of future installments as Evalle's journey continues.'' --RT Book Reviews --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

I always love Sherrilyn Kenyon books. The Beladore series hasn't been one of her best examples of why I love her writing, but I am so glad I kept the faith and purchased this latest addition. It is much more cohesive in that the main characters have finally revealed their relationship to one another and in true Kenyon style the romance of Evalle and Storm is dynamic and dynamite! Finally Evalle, as an Alterant, is making headway in her goal of gaining acceptance of all Alterants. Previously, she has been kept busy fruitlessly saving the day with her faithful heroics while never gaining the acknowledgment that Alterants are worth of a chance to live and be accepted. I love the strength of Evalle but until now there has been way too much struggle just to stay alive and very little else. Evalle has finally come to the rescue in such a big way that the powers that be are forced to stop persecuting all Alterants and give Evalle, Tristan, and other Alterants a place of honor as protectors. I am gratefully over my frustrations of waiting to get to the good parts Evalle's life and love. I recommend this novel to everyone who enjoys a great romance and a successful underdog rising to conquer the day.

First, let's take a moment to admire this cover. How bad ass does Evalle look in this? They say "Don't judge a book by its cover" but this one, I feel, really sets the mood for the book.

You got the mystic purple background which tells you there's some major magical stuff happening within these pages. The great bat winged horse sword that I just salivate over, and then I love the play on the eyes. You have the super hot Evalle and her glowing green eyes and in the sword's blade, you have reflected some creepy beast with the same eyes.

Given all of this, I still had no idea what was going to be coming at me when I opened this book. I am a huge fan of the Baledor series. Each book is like watching an entire season of your favorite television show. I say this because you don't just follow Evalle but Sherrilyn and Dianna introduce you to some absolutely wonderful characters who have their own thoughts and actions. They're not just there to support Evalle, they have their own lives and you want to know what is going down with them.

This series is known for its cliffhanger endings but Book 3 was the first time I didn't put down the book and curse two of my favorite Author Goddesses and demand blood for the next book.

Its hard to talk about this series without giving things away. There are so many twist and turns. But I will say that the story did not go where I thought it was. Dianna and Sherrilyn are masters of upping the ante and making you wonder how Evalle is going to get out of this.

We open the book up on a Beast Championship where magical creatures battle off against each other for sport. Kind of like a dog fight but with supernaturals and lots of magic.

If you have not read the previous Belador novels by Sherrilyn Kenyon and Dianna Love, I seriously recommend that you do so. This is not a stand alone book and honestly you need to be up to date. I have (yep have to.. ) read the previous books every time a new book is released.. so I am up to date. Going into this book thinking to read it first. Not a good idea. Especially this one.

Rise of the Gryphon is the fourth book in the Belador Series and it is what I would almost call a transition book. Evalle has finally decided that Storm is worth her trust.. she has committed to him but his past is quickly catching up on him and he is worried how it will effect her. Honestly Storm is just about the yummiest thing out there.. Totally swoonworthy..

Evalle has troubles of her own.. Macha, her alleged goddess (not my favorite character) has given her 5 days to convince 5, count em 5 alterants to submit to Macha as part of her pantheon.. Sure, no problem, who cares if VIPER has been hunting them and confining them as uncontrollable beasts for centuries? Why is it every time a god or goddess asks for help and makes a promise there is something twisted about it? Seriously, who cares that Evalle has worked with the Beladors faithfully for years, who cares if she is committed to serving her people? She is still treated like crap, even by her goddess..

The only way Evalle even stands a chance at finding 5 alterants is to attend the ABC (a beast fight).. except somehow slimeball Sen has found out about it and forbidden, yep forbidden anyone from Viper or any Beladors to attend it. It's totally off limits. So if Evalle does what Macha wants she can still catch it from Sen..

As usual there is a lot going on here.. Evalle and Storm are heating things up..

I found this series a couple weeks ago and read Bks 1 - 3 back to back. Maybe that is why I am now disappointed. These are 400 page books. I am the type of reader that gets frustrated with 1200 pages of foreplay with no climax. The earth shattering problem in book 1 is the uncompleted problem in Bk 4. (I stopped reading about page 20) Three books with the same exact tension and no resolution is exhausting. Wonderful characters have been added with each book. But, most get one or two sentences in each book. There are too many to allow any to evolve. Evalle is starving as she never eats, she also sleeps about 2 hours every 3 days. For 1200 pages. If Feenix was a child or dog he would be taken away from her due to neglect. He gets tossed a few lug nuts, then she disappears and doesn't come back sometimes for days. She goes from major injuries to on the brink of death a couple times each day. I really liked the books (that's why I read 3 back to back) until the same trolls in Bk 1 were still running amok in Bk 4. I have stopped and picked up an Anne Perry Monk mystery. This is also a series. But, Monk is set a mystery, he figures it out and I know I will get another, surprising Monk mystery in the next book. It is more fun for me to read a series with characters I like who are smart enough to take on new problems each book and figure it out by the end of the book. Many paranormal authors are able to do the same thing.
