This is a great game, but this particular edition is not what you should buy if you want to play with others (LAN or Internet). Despite the product image, this is the Ubisoft gold edition, which has version mismatch problems with other gold editions. It will not auto update to the same version as the normal Thrones & Patriots, so if you try to join a game you will get an error saying you need something like version 07.25.00.15705, even though the in game versions match.

There is a way around this which involves creating an ISO without the patch on the disc and using a No-CD executable, but it's a hassle and not worth it.

If you're going to play by yourself, this edition is fine. If you want to play with friends, look elsewhere (unless they all have the Ubisoft edition).

This game is truly fantastic. Multifaceted in-depth strategy somewhere between age of empires and civilization.

Rise of Nations is a very good game. It brings The Art of War to your finger tips. You learn real-time war tactics along with the history of many nations. This game is educational as well as entertaining for the thinking mind.

The picture is different from the product. Big surprise on Amazon, right?
Instead, it's this crappy Ubisoft version. The multiplayer does not work because this version will not allow for updates. Do not buy if you plan on playing online!

I have played RON for years. Recently, I uninstalled my game, then could not find the code to reregister. So, I ordered this copy. Ten bucks, easy peasy. Not! I can't get support from Microsoft because my new registration number is for the European version, and the Thrones and Patriots portion will not load. So, I'm out ten bucks and still have no game to play.

I am a history teacher "to be," and was looking for a game that could be used to increase the learner's desire to study history and I believe this is it. I tried other games but I believe that "Rise of Nations" is perfect, it offers a multitude of playing options and speeds. I kinda enjoy the game myself, maybe a little too much. I am a huge fan of Age of Empires and looked forward to this when it came out. I have to say it is indeed fun....but suffers from one major CON. The resources, as long as you control certain areas, are INFINITE...I prefer having to monitor my level of resources like in AOE but in this one you just sit there and let it rake in...I lose interest this way, plus you can't just build anywhere. You can only build in your own territory or territory owned by an ally. Other than that the game is still worth getting, it's prepatched and works without the disc. Simple and fast install for quick play.

Great game for begginers and old gamers alike. Easy to use and not a ton of commands.

I just want to support what Jeff B said about the Ubisoft version. I am having this exact issue when I play online. Either be sure to get the real "Gold" version or make sure that you and your friends all have the same version - all ubisoft or all gold.

It is a real dissapointment since Rise of Nations is a fantastic game. It is going on 5 years, yet there is an avid player community out there. Never has a Civilization-like game been so customizeable and replayable. Love, love the game. Hate the version issue. Now, I need to find the right version so my brother and I can play together.

Rise of Nations took all the best parts of Civ and the AOE series, wrapped it into a neat package that transcending through the ages, giving us an RTS experience like no others at the time.
How much fun did you have nuking your friends because they were too slow to get their missile shield up?

Or loosing the Terracotta wonder/army to another player because you did not have enough builders working on it.
A fun, fun RTS experience with lots of replay-ability. I just wish Rise of Legends had been as good.
