Rise Sparkles,
By Kari (Chicago, IL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Rise (Audio CD)
Rubyhorse's debut album does just what the first single says -- it sparkles. Whether you like alternative rock with crunchy guitars or pop music with soaring melodies and catchy hooks, this record is for you. There's a little something for every taste here -- the haunting yet inspiring "Live Through This," the feel-good "Sparkle," the rocking "Happy in the Sunshine"... and the list goes on. Setting themselves apart from the rap-rock soundalikes on modern radio, Rubyhorse creates music that matters, and sounds incredible in the process. Do yourself a favor, and buy this album.

'Rise' Breaks New Ground in Modern Rock,
By Harith Abdullah (Albany, NY USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Rise (Audio CD)
'Rise' is an ambient, rocking delight. From the first notes of this, their debut record, it is clear that Rubyhorse have created their own sound, unlike anything out there today. In a world of conformity and normality, Rubyhorse set themselves apart as an exciting alternative to mainstream pop rock. The single, Sparkle, is just the tip of the iceberg, only hinting at the amalgam of electronic beats and rock and roll heart behind the record. The unity of the tracks is a true rarity in modern music. The songs work so well together, and off one another, that it is impossible to think of them as a random assembly of possible singles. Happy in the Sunshine, the album opener, eases you in with a soothing sound collage, then ever so gradually shifts to an upbeat guitar anthem. The optimistic ballad Punchdrunk boasts former Beatle George Harrison on slide guitar, a great honor on which Rubyhorse have made no attempt to capitalize. The soft-spoken final track, The First of the Year, serves almost as a look forward and backward, at once a "thanks for listening" and "see you next time." Rubyhorse's marriage of classic rock and modern stylism, European and American sounds, stunning instrumentation with melodic vocals and moving lyrics, is the perfect addition to any music fan's collection. 'Rise' is the work of a band primed for greatness.

It doesn't happen often. I take a chance, buy a CD of a group I've never heard of based on hearing one song and I love the entire CD.
I'm blown away by all the songs, but especially Evergreen, Horseless, Live Through This, Sparkle and Teenage Distraction. They have a unique sound...

great album,

I first heard Rubyhorse while listening to the radio in Ireland. The song that was playing was "Sparkle". I immediately looked them up online and then got "Rise". The entire album is fantastic. I must say that I am a bit disappointed by how few albums you can buy here in the US. They have a couple of other albums out that are available in the UK and Ireland.

I accidently ran across this band. I heard a song of their entitled "Warning Bells" (which is not on this cd) and i rather enjoyed it so i purchased the CD 'Rise'. I'm not long winded at all but just let me sayThis is the best album of 2002 Amazing work, lyrically and musically.

Best band ever? yep,
By A Customer

I think my title says it all, this album is sheer genius. It has enough for all types of fans, emo, rock, and the broad "alternative." This band is something you do NOT want to miss, listen to the clips then buy the album and thank me later.

I cannot say enough about this release from these Irishmen who came to Boston. Excellent vocals, thoughtful and/or positive lyrics, playing and production. Love the funky "evergreen" intro., "sparkle" does, there really is not a bad cut on here - I honestly enjoyed this from start to finish. I cannot wait to see them live. Untypical & Highly Recommended!!

Rubyhorse "Rise"s to the occasion.,
By Matthew D. Winship (Mt Tabor, NJ United States) - See all my reviews

Rubyhorse left their native Ireland a few years back for the distant shores of Boston MA they had less than $1000 to their name; they haven't looked back! Those of you familiar with the band with be familiar with most of the tracks on this album, most are virtually unchanged from "How Far Have You Come," the band's indie release. Their sound is a mix between The Beatles, U2, and their good friends, Flickerstick.

Destined to Be a Classic,
By Ashley Casey (Baton Rouge, LA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Rise (Audio CD)
I have been listening to the music on this album for close to a year off their indie relase "How Far Have You Come" and off MP3.com... it is some of the most addictive, interesting and enjoyable music I have ever heard. "Evergreen" is my absolute favorite song... it is a wonderful song to exercise to with a great tempo and encouraging lyrics... the exceedingly positive "Sparkle" is destined to be a classic love song... every time you hear it you wonder who the incredible person it was written for is... This is great music to work out to (the tempo and the lyrics will keep you moving), great music to drive to, great music to unwind to... Rubyhorse puts on a live show that shows they are destined for arenas... hopefully "Rise" will help them get there.

I first saw Rubyhorse opening for Lifehouse, and was very impressed by their raw energy, enthusiasm, and original rockality! Definitely get "Rise" if you're into straightforward rock with some dashes of pop, dance, mood, and soaring spirit. The band also has a new album out entitled "Goodbye to All That," which is released under the band's new record label. For now, you can only get the new album at the band's website, http://www.rubyhorse.com - there you can order the new album, old albums, and merchandise, of course. "Goodbye to All That" is a darker journey, much moodier than "Rise," but takes off from where their former album left off. The whole album reminds me of "Live Through This" off "Rise" and has more variations on different tracks. Anyway, check out this band because they're worth the effort! (From the Sharpie girl) |
