5.0 out of 5 starsGreat avant-garde jazz-rock, April 25, 2001

This review is from: Rise Up (Audio CD)
This disk features very cool avant-garde music that's half-jazz, half-rock, and maybe a few other things as well. Main instruments are electric guitar (w/ heavy rock distortion), harp, trombone and other horns, violin, and Kitty Brazelton's voice. Some folks, I believe, call music like this "Downtown Jazz", but I'd identify it as "RIO", as it has a lot in common with the avant-jazzy tendencies of Henry Cow, the foremost RIO (Rock in Opposition) band. This music is a bit grittier though, as Brazelton's vocals are kind of husky, and there's a bit 'squonkier' sound to the horns. Highly recommended to folks looking for something fun and a bit different.
