Malcolm X meets Bob Marley...,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Rise Up (Audio CD)
or Patti Smith does Funkadelic.
There really is no adequate way to describe this latest incarnation of Azeem, who now teams up with mix-miester Zeph to form some of the most unique rap rhythms since Public Enemy introduced Coltrane and be-bop to the hip hop world...and the lyricism is the logical progression of the Gil Scott-Heron/PE school of MESSAGE RAP...and for those latter-day Rate-a-Record bandstanders---it's got a beat you can dance to. The BEAT is heavily Caribbean at times, reminiscent of the founders of rap---those yard party DJs in Jamaica playing the dub side of the records while chanting over it---and for those of you who never got the chance to catch Run DMC doing block parties in Hollis or the Fugees at a street fair in Harlem, THIS ALBUM captures all that excitement of the NEXT BIG THANG in rap!!!
