RISE OF THE WOLF is the third installment of best-selling historical fiction author Steven McKay’s wonderful Forest Lord series. Set in Barnsdale Forest in Yorkshire Yorkshire (rather than the more familiar Sherwood forest in Nottinghamshire), McKay’s reworking of this classic tale is masterful. Rather than drawing on the folklore that gave rise to the Robin Hood stories that most of us have all grown up with (and that Hollywood has done to death – almost literally), McKay taps an alternative – and much older – literary vein: the original fifteenth century Robin Hood ballads. Like the recent reboot of the Star Trek, this move opens up all sorts of possibilities for developing new stories and for deepening and enriching characters we thought we new, and once loved, but that have become shopworn and more than a little campy over time. More about this below, but MacKay’s Robin Hood is certainly not the Robin Hood played by Errol Flynn in the 1938 film, The Adventures of Robin Hood; nor, mercifully, is he the Robin Hood played by Kevin Costner in Prince of Thieves. Rather, he is a complex, multilayered and therefore realistic character, simultaneously embodying a rough chivalry (and increasingly well-developed sense of fatherhood) and an ever-evolving capacity for brutality and violence.

Ok, you might be thinking, McKay has done something interesting and significant with this series. That’s great. But what can you tell me about this particular novel? What can you tell me about the plot, setting, character development, dialogue, action, etc.? Is it a cracking read or a tedious one? Should I shell out my hard-earned dollars, pounds, euros or whatever and buy it – or should pass on this one and buy another (and there are a lot of good histfic novels out there)?

The Rise of the Wolf is the third in the marvellous Forest Lord series by Steven A. McKay and delivers, once again, a solid, engrossing read that hits you like a punch in the guts! When an author takes on such a well-known tale featuring a character such as Robin Hood he is either brave, or foolish. He has to bring something to the tale that breathes fresh life into the story. Something that sets it apart from all the previous tales, or it is simply a pot of reheated left-overs. Thankfully Steven has given a whole new spin on the man with the bow. Those who have read the previous books know to expect to find themselves in Yorkshire, deep in the leafy expanse of Barnsdale Forest rather than the green trees of Sherwood. The change in location, a nod to the earliest ballads of where Robin lived, gives plenty of scope for the author to explore new avenues for Robin and his band of merry (and miserable) men. This is something which readers should be grateful for.
Here we have a version of Robin Hood probably closer to how a real outlaw would have lived than that familiar from TV and movie adaptations. While Kevin Costner’s portrayal looked more like a 90’s AOR music video star, who liked nothing more than relaxing in a trendy bar sipping pinot grigio and listening to George Michael, McKay’s Robin Hood is the sort of man who kicks open the door of a rough pub, orders a pint of real ale in a dirty glass, then cranks the juke-box up to 11 and blasts out Ace of Spades till the windows shatter!
He is so much the better for that!
Rise of the Wolf is a full-blooded, rip roaring adventure from start to finish that delivers a series of tremendous set-pieces. From ambushes and betrayal, to love and redemption, the story gallops along at a break-neck pace that leaves you breathless.

I absolutely loved RISE OF THE WOLF.
Robin Hood is wishing he could live a normal life with his wife Matilda and his son Arthur. But he is still a Wolf's Head, an outlaw who still has to return to the forest after visits with his family. Sir Guy of Gisbourne was still pursuing Robin and his men. Gisbourne also known as the Raven had lost an eye and had the side of his face scarred from his last skirmish with Robin and would never give up pursuing Robin. He definitely wanted revenge.
At the same time Tuck decides to return to the monastery for a quieter life. He would take with him a priceless relic which he hoped would make him welcome there.
This book moves at a fast pace and is exciting and fun. Fantastic read!!!

Yet another tremendous read by Mr Steven A McKay, gripped from the 1st page to the last page, non stop action with well told story, intriguing plot with some very good informative chapters of other untouched characters who bring their own to this superb read, as the proud owner of the whole forest lord series to date i can hand on heart say that, this was the best to date, and that says a lot after my high opinions of the previous 2, this book as the rest of the collection is a must read for all fans of historical fiction.

here are three books so far in the Forest Lord Series - Wolf's Head, The Wolf and the Raven and Rise of the Wolf. I first found this series in 2014 and have waited patiently as each book was published. I was always interested in Robin Hood stories, starting when I was a child, so it was natural when I found these books to want to read them as well.
It is great to see Robin, Little John, Friar Tuck and all the other familiar characters come alive in these books. There is never a dull moment from the beginning of the book to the very end. Sir Guy of Gisbourne as the King's man, trying to apprehend the outlaws, always keeps you wondering what will happen next.

I was delighted that the third book in this series Rise of the Wolf was published on July 31, 2015. It was a great companion as I travelled home from a holiday. Time passed very quickly, following Robin and his merry men and their adventures.

I would definitely recommend these books by Steven A. McKay and was delighted to find that there will be one more book in the future!!
