This is the best Pu-ehr available now on Amazon.
The earthy-ness that characterizes I would rank at
a 9 of 10. The flavor opens up with each sip as
it cools down while drinking. By the end of cup one
you are ready for more, and each tou che allows a
few steepings.

3.0 out of 5 stars Opinion of a non-tea expert: It's delivers on the "earthy," but maybe not the most refined experience?
Form: bottle-cap size pressed cakes, dark color. Opens to medium-sized leaves. Looks to be at least somewhat tippy. Could be wrong about that, though.
Color: Dark as coffee, but with a more reddish tone. Quite pretty actually.
Smell: smoke and some faint sweetness.
Tate: Very assertive. Dry hay dust. Wet mulch. Smoke. Long-lingering smokey/woody...

not unpleasing. If you like strong dark coffee, this would take
it's place in a heart beat.

One thing not mentioned on the can, while water is set to boil, run
the lil' birds nest tou che under some hot water to "loosen" it proir to
steeping. Not special to this brand, is just the proper way to prepare
the beverage.

This review is from: Rishi Tea Organic Pu-erh Tuo Cha Loose Tea, 5-Ounce Tin (Pack of 2) (Grocery)
I was first introduced to Pu-Ehr tea by a Chinese friend, who told me that most westerners do not like it. After one sip, I agreed with him, and after one cup, I was hooked. That's the way it is with Pu-Ehr tea - initially an acquired taste, then an addiction.

This tea is quite a good Pu-Ehr for the price. Some low quality Pu-Ehr tastes very musty and earthy; this does not. I brew one brick in a 22 fluid ounce (0.65 liter), and this yields the entire Pu-Ehr experience. (A can contains 25 bricks.) The first cups are mild, but the bottom couple of cups yield the heavy duty Pu-Ehr jolt.

Never add sugar or milk or lemon to Pu-Ehr, just take it straight or with dried chrysanthemum blossoms.

This is my new favorite tea. It's black as coffee maybe even darker. It has a very strong flavor. You will either love it or hate it. The tea leaves are allowed to decompose or compost a bit.... it is weird but it makes a amazingly powerful tea. It is supposed to promote weight loss if you want to use it for that reason.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delicious cooked pu-erh, July 19, 2010

This review is from: Rishi Tea Organic Pu-erh Tuo Cha Loose Tea, 5-Ounce Tin (Pack of 2) (Grocery)
I'm SO glad I gave these tuo chas a chance!!! I've recently become a huge pu-erh fan, so I've been on the lookout for great pu-erh that won't cost me a leg. I keep hearing that tuos don't usually have great quality, that often tea dust and poor quality leaves are compressed to make the "nests" (and yes, I've tasted those often enough to say it's true), but that's not the case here. In fact, this has become one of my favorite pu-erhs. (I've also tried Rishi Tea Pu-erh Classic, 3.2-Ounce Tins (Pack of 3), which I thought was bound to be better simply because it was loose leaf, but that is not the case. I was not impressed... this one is much tastier.)

I can get 3 huge mugs (each with a strong brew) out of 1 little tuo. The 4th one is already too watery, but the 3rd is still as strong as I like. This tea made me understand those comments about good pu-erh being "a mouthful", thick (I used to wonder what on earth it meant); it is like gulping milk, very interesting experience. I can't really describe the flavor, except to say that it's mellow, sweet, and very yummy. As all pu-erhs, it never gets bitter. To make this taste like heaven, I sometimes add a little bit of Numi Organic Tea Chocolate Puerh, Loose Leaf Tea, 16 Ounce Bag for some chocolate/vanilla/orange flavor - perfection in a cup!!!

I was wondering how many tuos actually fit into one of these little tins... and the answer is, quite a lot of them! That was another good surprise.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pleasant Surprise, May 17, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I like trying different teas (primarily non-herbals), and after hearing about Pu-erh I was intriqued. From what I've read so far, I believe this particular version is not aged like the very high-end, expensive, caked versions are, but it seemed like a good way to get a taste of this tea variety. I am not disappointed at all. Though it's not a drastic departure from other teas, it's not quite like any I've had before. It's very mild and earthy, with a subtle sweetness -- VERY pleasant!

Something else that sets it apart from other (non-herbal) teas: It doesn't get bitter after extended steeping! Furthermore, as I've read elsewhere, just one serving goes a long way. In fact, I never stop steeping it. When my cup is almost empty, I just top it off again. I get at least four flavorful cups with just one of the prewrapped nuggets.

This instantly became one of my favorite teas. I'm delighted I finally discovered it, and just may have to spend the $ to try one of the more expensive/exotic versions. If it's even better than this, I would understand why folks are willing to pay such a premium $.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deliciously Dark, December 5, 2007
Was surprised to see that though it was loose leaf tea that it came in individually wrapped briquettes. Very cute.

Very dark, full body. Easily able to get 4+ steepings out of it. More if you don't like it strong & steep it for less time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Next best thing to buying in China, May 20, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Rishi Tea Organic Pu-erh Tuo Cha Loose Tea, 5-Ounce Tin (Pack of 2) (Grocery)
By the way, this is not a loose tea but compressed cubes which is easier to take with you if you travel. I started drinking this tea when I visited China last year. I read about how it aids digestion after meals, so I drink it late at night. I noticed a great side effect of reducing my cravings for in-between meal eating and junk food. In that way, it can be used as a weight loss aid. It also helps get rid of excess water weight. I try to drink a cup at least every night and sometimes in the morning if I ate heavy meat the night before. This is not the same quality as the loose tea I buy in China but it will do until I get back to stock up. The true loose tea is much better because you can control how much you want to drink. For the reviewers who said their items smelled like fish, I have not smelled bad pu-er tea. The Chinese say it can keep for years if you refrigerate it or keep it in a cool dark place. I gave this only 4 stars because I have tasted better but I may order this again if I cannot get back to China.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rishi Pu-erh Tuo Cha Is The Answer, November 28, 2010

This review is from: Rishi Tea Organic Pu-erh Tuo Cha Loose Tea, 5-Ounce Tin (Pack of 2) (Grocery)
I have been a connoisseur of quality green, oolong for many moons, and I also enjoy a good cup of morning Joe. I had tried loose Pu-erh previously and was bitten by the smooth coffee like mouth feel of the variety. This is not green tea taste be prepared, but is very earthy and rich especially during the first and second flushes. These nuggets of goodness have replaced my boring coffee routine. I prefer it strong and thick usually dropping two Tuo Cha nugs in my tea pot. I'm here to report the following; calm alertness, healthy as green and if you believe might help drop a few points on your disappointing cholesterol numbers before your next visit.

It's true......strong earthy aroma is apparent primarily during the first flush, but is very part of the brew process, brew is clear not cloudy and taste is never sharp or tannic. Be warned I've tried the flavored varieties, and filler is not my cup of tea. If you like it sweet add a little honey and say goodbye to the beans!

I like my coffee strong enough to stand a fork in it. I like my teas just as strong, but, I like this tea because of the absense of tannic after taste so many strong teas have. I find this tea refreshing, the finish smooth. It has my five star vote. I only wish I had the funds to try the forty year old stuff.

This is the way I like my Pu-Erh - rich, deep, earthy, full bodied, etc. Most of the other Pu-Erh I've tried have been closer to a green tea both in taste and the jittery effect. No jitters here, just ultra rich smooth tea. A Chinese friend gave me some of her Pu-Erh at work one day which was so-so. I paid her back with of this Rishi Pu-Erh and she was raving on and on about it's amazing taste. Getting 10 ounces for $13 something on the auto ship deal is a fantastic price for Pu-Erh of this quality.
