When it fits, it provides a sturdy barrier, quick to put on or remove. It can be particularly helpful when renting vacation houses or condos where some realtors, property managers, or maintenance men tend to enter without even knocking at times. Too many people seem to have keys, and feel entitled to enter whenever they please, at such places. Unfortunately, it only fits traditional doors, and only when the door and lock fit the frame perfectly.

I have never been able to use it at a hotel, and too often find it won't work in regular doors. Unfortunately, housekeeping and maintenance staff have keys to ALL locks, even deadbolts, and can even get into rooms with security bars easily. I would like to see a new version of this for hotels, and some change that would make it easier to use on "imperfect" doors.

UPDATE: THIS ITEM HAS BEEN CHANGED, SINCE I WROTE THE REVIEW. I AM CONCERNED BECAUSE IT IS NOW MORE DIFFICULT TO REMOVE. The new design has a thinner metal plate, that bends easily, causing it to become stuck in the door at times. The opening in the metal plate, used to secure the plastic part to the plate, is now much smaller than before. This makes it harder to set up, and remove. As a result of these changes, it can be difficult to remove the Addalock and open the door. I never had any problems with the old style Addalocks.

I bought this for a friend who lives in an apartment with a faulty door that her landlord fix. Initial installation was a bit difficult, even with the provided instructions and a gadget-handy person such as myself. But don't give up! Once you get the hang of it, this little lock will provide you with inexpensive security. Once installed, the door became nice and tight, and we were unable to open from the outside, even with a key.

It can be used on any door that opens inward, so it's great for travel. Hotel staff can't open the door to your room even with a key or key card.

Downside is, you might want to plan an alternate escape in case of fire. The lock detaches quickly, but could be trouble if it is dark, smoky, or otherwise difficult to see. I have practiced blindfolded to ensure that I can get it off.

Purchased this last week for an upcoming trip to Europe for use as an added measure of security in the hotel rooms we are staying in. Received extremely fast using Amazon Prime.

Tested this portable lock in my home with 2 different doors and works wonders! With this lock on, it will make it extremely difficult for an intruder to come in to your room. Though the red piece is plastic it is reinforced with a metal plate underneath it which makes it really solid! This makes the entire portable lock made of metal! Once installed, it was difficult for me to go in the home. I think that I would have to kick the door in to jar this portable lock loose.

Great extra measure of security! I'll sleep better knowing that even if an intruder manage to pick the locks of my hotel room, they would have to kick the door in to open it with this portable lock in place!

Great buy! Thanks...

I recently started to rent a house. I don't want to be disturbed when I am in my bedroom, but I realized that my new bedroom door does not have a lock. Because I am renting, installing a lock to the door is not an option.
I searched a bit, and found this product.
First, I did not understand how this kind of portable lock can work, but according to other reviewers' comments, it should work if there is enough gap for a quarter coin between the door and the frame. OK, I confirmed the gap. I was still skeptical, but ordered Add-A-Lock anyway. About a week later, I received it. And it worked perfectly as promised!! Very easy to install and remove. This is a good one. Impressive!

This lock is nice because I live in an apartment. It won't damage anything and is easy to use. Sometimes the maintenance people come much earlier than expected, which can be a problem if I'm getting ready/showering or napping. This lock prevents them from entering before I'm ready for them to come in.

Very good invention... No "installation" necessary in terms of screws etc. Slips in between just fine, super simple. For the occaisional tighter fit, just turn the knob first, and then close it in... Simple. Have'nt tried this in a hotel yet... I believe it will work in most Motels though. Had a RIDICULOUS "landlord" and workman that would just go into people's apartments whenever they flippin' wanted! Almost killed a guy during one of these events. Bought cameras, and rigged all kinds of barricades to keep these nuts out and myself out of jail because of them. Wish I had just ONE of these during that truly miserable time. Now, no matter where I go, I have a few of these no matter what. I'm a very large man with serious combat training, and I would much rather let these babies do a terrific job as opposed to having to resort to setting up booby traps ever again, or ending up in court for mangling some fool for foolishly intruding.

Though not really useful for when you are OUTSIDE, it is funny to set it up backwards just to show there's something at instant one they probably don't want to mess with when it comes to you insisting on your privacy.

As stated in the beginning, I wish I had just one of these awhile back, but I have learned alot from such ridiculous circumstances, and have since learned much more civilized methods to guarantee my privacy which to me is priceless. This little rig does help quite a bit... you will like it. It is also adjustable and again just pretty neat, though you would be wise to pick up a few other security tools and enjoy peace of mind without possibly harming some stupid intruder, deserved or otherwise.

UPDATE:
Picked up yet another, and it is designed very differently.
