Solid portable lock!!,

Purchased this last week for an upcoming trip to Europe for use as an added measure of security in the hotel rooms we are staying in. Received extremely fast using Amazon Prime.
Tested this portable lock in my home with 2 different doors and works wonders! With this lock on, it will make it extremely difficult for an intruder to come in to your room. Though the red piece is plastic it is reinforced with a metal plate underneath it which makes it really solid! This makes the entire portable lock made of metal! Once installed, it was difficult for me to go in the home. I think that I would have to kick the door in to jar this portable lock loose. Great extra measure of security! I'll sleep better knowing that even if an intruder manage to pick the locks of my hotel room, they would have to kick the door in to open it with this portable lock in place! Great buy! Thanks...

This Add-A-Lock works as promised. It was easy to install and has a handy nylon carrying case. If you put this product in your cabin luggage, be sure to include a copy of the instruction sheet in case airport security officials as you what the Add-A-Lock is. The only minor improvement suggestion is that the one page instruction should have been more than a color printout from an inkjet printer that is not water resistant. Overall, this is a simple device that is solidly constructed and did the job in securing my hotel rooms while I was on an extended trip to China.

Wish I Had This Awhile Back,

Very good invention... No "installation" necessary in terms of screws etc. Slips in between just fine, super simple. For the occaisional tighter fit, just turn the knob first, and then close it in... Simple. Have'nt tried this in a hotel yet... I believe it will work in most Motels though. Had a RIDICULOUS "landlord" and workman that would just go into people's apartments whenever they flippin' wanted! Almost killed a guy during one of these events. Bought cameras, and rigged all kinds of barricades to keep these nuts out and myself out of jail because of them. Wish I had just ONE of these during that truly miserable time. Now, no matter where I go, I have a few of these no matter what. I'm a very large man with serious combat training, and I would much rather let these babies do a terrific job as opposed to having to resort to setting up booby traps ever again, or ending up in court for mangling some fool for foolishly intruding.
Though not really useful for when you are OUTSIDE, it is funny to set it up backwards just to show there's something at instant one they probably don't want to mess with when it comes to you insisting on your privacy. As stated in the beginning, I wish I had just one of these awhile back, but I have learned alot from such ridiculous circumstances, and have since learned much more civilized methods to guarantee my privacy which to me is priceless. This little rig does help quite a bit... you will like it. It is also adjustable and again just pretty neat, though you would be wise to pick up a few other security tools and enjoy peace of mind without possibly harming some stupid intruder, deserved or otherwise. UPDATE: Picked up yet another, and it is designed very differently. It is difficult to explain how, given the very unique/clever design... Best way I can describe it is that it's depth adjustability is dramatically different, the ones prior being much more versatile. Still great to have, and you can be sure they do the job right. I'm glad I have some of the adjustable ones... different doorways simply do not fit the most recent design. I'd write in beforehand asking if these are the 4 notch adjustables (ideal) or the less versatile tringular notch design, Sidenote- I found a GREAT place... everything is clean especially the water (thank god) but sure enough, a workman who was not aware I happened to be home that day (I male sure *everytime* now always being certain of when they decide to drift by) tried to come in without prior notice/permission... but this did the trick beautifully. He tried for nearly two minutes (as hidden video also shows) trying the right keys first, then thinking he must be using the wrong ones, trying others, and then trying the correct ones again, turning the knob and pushing with no luck at all. I fought myself from confronting him on the spot, as I am really trying to not let this kind of thing make me as upset as it once did (albeit for appropriate reason) and instead decided not to, opting to see if he was going to mention anything about it. Not a peep... as I expected. Did ask me later alot about my expensive electronics and reminded him I'm pretty good with stocks, have all my financials to prove it and offered him a discounted rate for some investment consultation. Shut him up entirely after that. In any event- It just goes to show you.., if someone else has keys to your place, nosy utterly wacko girlfriend (the i intial reason I became interested in things like these) workmen, landlords, don't be shocked... happens every day and almost certainly to everybody- save your peace of mind and right to prevent nosy weirdos from bothering you. Get some good locks... they exist for very good reason, and there are few if any good reasons not to use them.

WORKS WELL, BUT DOESN'T ALWAYS FIT (few Hotels),
By
This review is from: Add-A-Lock (Misc.)
When it fits, it provides a sturdy barrier, quick to put on or remove. It can be particularly helpful when renting vacation houses or condos where some realtors, property managers, or maintenance men tend to enter without even knocking at times. Too many people seem to have keys, and feel entitled to enter whenever they please, at such places. Unfortunately, it only fits traditional doors, and only when the door and lock fit the frame perfectly.
I have never been able to use it at a hotel, and too often find it won't work in regular doors. Unfortunately, housekeeping and maintenance staff have keys to ALL locks, even deadbolts, and can even get into rooms with security bars easily. I would like to see a new version of this for hotels, and some change that would make it easier to use on "imperfect" doors.

I recently started to rent a house. I don't want to be disturbed when I am in my bedroom, but I realized that my new bedroom door does not have a lock. Because I am renting, installing a lock to the door is not an option.
I searched a bit, and found this product. First, I did not understand how this kind of portable lock can work, but according to other reviewers' comments, it should work if there is enough gap for a quarter coin between the door and the frame. OK, I confirmed the gap. I was still skeptical, but ordered Add-A-Lock anyway. About a week later, I received it. And it worked perfectly as promised!! Very easy to install and remove. This is a good one. Impressive!

Product works well, and is easy to install for the most part. Some doors may be a bit tight when installing. for the most part, an excellent product. keep it and the instructions in the carrying case bvecause TSA inspectors will question what this is.

Great Product to Have,

We bought two of these years ago and we're moving to a rental home and want more. I have used one in the garage with the side door that goes into the garage as an added measure of security. They make it extremely difficult to get in the door, if not impossible. Its been nice having them while we travel as well, it's just a nice added security feature. We traveled to Hawaii last year and took it with us. While I was in the room with our 15 month old son while my husband was out working I didnt have to worry about someone breaking in. Its inexpensive peace of mind.

Simplicity in itself,

This device is small and very easy to use. It is only as strong as your door frame and it probably wouldn't deter a determined intruder, however, it would make it impossible for a lock picker to open your door. You could use this device without even locking your door and no one could get in unless they broke it down. Mine came without instructions but was easy to figure out. It was also bent in the wrong direction which I was able to fix with a pair of vice grips (the metal part that stays on the inside of the room has a bend that is supposed to bend away from the doorknob in order to make it easy to hold onto when installing). It would rate 5 stars from me if it came with instructions and had been properly bent.

It was suggested that I needed one of these for an upcoming trip. After doing a bit of research, this seemed to be the best of this sort of thing. After seeing it first hand, I am very impressed with both the design and the construction of the Add-a-Lock.It took a few minutes to figure out (without the use of included instructions), but once I got the hang of it, it is very easy to work. Most children 5+ could be taught how to operate it. I did not use directions on purpose as I had concerns about how easy it would be to get out of the locked room in case of fire or other emergency. Yes, it will slow you up, but literally only by a few seconds. Simply pull the red thing up & out and the door is free. I tested it on various doors in our home - and it worked on all of them It appears to work on any door with a latch hole (w/ striking plate?) on the door frame that also opens into the room. Once engaged, no one from outside will be coming in, with or without a key unless they come literally *through* the door itself. I like another comment about keeping the directions with you for going through TSA - I can see this is something they may question. Until you see it in action, it is hard to understand the purpose of a piece of plastic chained to a hunk of metal.

Works well, Somewhat Expensive,

This is a great little device and works very well on doors with a 'standard' latch/strike plate. One thing to note is there has to be enough of a gap to slip the metal portion between the door and the strikeplate. For very tight fitting doors, this product may not work (as in an earlier review).
It definitely adds some security and it is fairly solid, but it certainly doesn't take the place of a deadbolt. For what it is intended for, it really serves its purpose well - which would be to help secure hotel/rental/dorm room doors which you can't (or don't want) to drill holes into. My only complaint is the price is high for the cost of materials, it would be a much better buy at 14.99, and I would have purchased a few more at that price. |
