Songs of devotion..., September 30, 2010
This review is from: The Rising (Audio CD)
Christian artist Charlie Hall's new CD "The Rising" is a worship album, with lyrics praising God, thanking Him for guidance, and for watching over us. Opening is the rocker "The Rising (A Song Of Ascent)" extolling "the God that saves, and heals the broken". Other superb upbeat songs are the bouncy "Ransom", the pulsing U2/Delirious?-style "King Of Heaven", and the Punk-tinged "Make Me Alive" which is incredibly catchy.
"God Ablaze" is a nice midtempo rocker with chiming guitars and quivering effects. The ballad "Constant" touches on God's faithfulness (with a great guitar break to boot), while the moody "Deeper In Love" is an emotional cry by a broken prodigal with lyrics like "This prideful side of me, lifts my fist and shakes at You, this prideful side of me, is being broken down by love".
"Breathe" isn't the popular classic (done be everyone from Michael W Smith to Rebecca St James) but a new composition with a moving layered vocal coda which sounds like a diverse multitude at worship. Closing is the atmospheric acoustic 7 minute epic "Sleep And Dreams", a falsetto-sung lullaby which incorporates a children's choir. This is a lovely collection of songs of devotion.
