Editorial Reviews

Review

"Beneath the brutality that these words describe, shines the soul and strength of poets who are not only survivors, but through their creative expression have flourished. Anyone who has been a victim of rape will find solace in these words that articulate the inexpressible. Those who have been untouched by sex crimes will find new understanding." -- Elizabeth Garzarelli, M.A., Psychologist

"Rising to the Dawn: A Rape Survivor's Journey Into Healing" edited by LaVerne C. Williams, presents profoundly moving accounts of the experiences of victims and survivors of rape. These are heroic women who refuse to be silent any longer. Their writings, while poignantly expressing the anguish and despair of their experiences, also offer life affirming messages of hope." -- Judy S., CWS, Counselor, Victims Information Bureau of Suffolk

"Rising to the Dawn: A Rape Survivor's Journey Into Healing" is a compelling, tragic and heart-wrenching anthology of overwhelming significance to all individuals, male and female, who have been abused mentally or physically. A testimony that they are not alone." -- Holly Roberts, D.O. Obstetrcian-GYN

1.0 out of 5 stars Definitely NOT what I expected, November 17, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Rising to the Dawn: A Rape Survivor's Journey into Healing (Paperback)
Having read several books on rape in the past year, I was ready for something deeper, more powerful, perhaps even a bit tougher to read. I purchased this book of poetry thinking that I would find what I was searching for. How very wrong I was. This thin book of poetry is definitely NOT worth the price. It was tough to read at certain points due to it's obviously graphic nature, but I did not find myself riveted to reading it...other than the fact that I felt I had to because I had paid so much for it. I do not recommend this book for rape survivors. It is not worth your time or your money.

4.0 out of 5 stars Powerful, November 26, 2000

This review is from: Rising to the Dawn: A Rape Survivor's Journey into Healing (Paperback)
I thought that the idea of allowing rape survivors a channel in which to express their anger, fear, and sense of hope via poetry was very original. Yes, there are a number of books on rape, but usually they are not an anthology of survivors being allowed to be totally free in their expression. I thought the book was deep, and worth every penny. I highly recommend anyone who has been a victim of sexual assault to get this book and RELATE to the women between the covers.
