5.0 out of 5 stars An incredibly suspenseful original work. November 30, 2010
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I ended up reading this primarily at night for the added atmospheric bonus, and boy did it add to the already suspenseful and horrific events that were taking place in the book. If you're looking something that will have a feeling of The Ring mixed with a Silent Hill-esque feel, this is definitely for you. It's a great work and the character development through and through is fantastic as with all of Michaelbrent's work.

I'll openly admit: I am burned out of the thriller genre. I discovered it shortly after going to college, and after devouring every James Patterson book I could get my hands on (as well as many other from similarly-minded authors), I grew bored with the genre. There's only so many narrow escapes, near-death experiences, and ambiguous chapter breaks that one can take.

Rising Fears, however, grabbed me and hooked me right back in. This is probably due to Collings' masterful blend of supernatural horror with the pacing of a thriller novel, which made old ideas seem fresh and kept me reading until the end.

The town of Rising (get it? "Rising" Fears? Ha!) seems to be an idealistic place...until all hell breaks loose. The story follows James, an ex-LAPD who is having problems coping with the past deaths of his wife and child. As grisly murders and weirder and weirder circumstances begin plaguing the town, it's up to James to figure out what is going on...before he is the next victim.

The book is fast and keeps the tension up. It almost reads like a screenplay from time to time, which both helps and hinders it (depending on the situation). Good use of classic horror trickery such as the reappearing of a creepy object (in this case, a black crayon), haunting nightmares, and more keep everything fresh and deliciously creepy. It'll be hard to put the book down when you hit the second half.

My only complaint was it took me a while until I was completely hooked. The book starts with a bang, but because of its breakneck pace we hardly get to see "deeper" in the characters until near the ending of the book. This is a problem with the genre, not this book in particular, but the point still stands.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping and Primal February 27, 2012
Format:Paperback
Unexplained and bizarre deaths in small-town Washington trap the sheriff and a local teacher, forcing them to confront evil without and within. I can't read novels that don't actually tell stories; this book was hard to put down, hooking me at the end of every chapter and driving me to the end with relentless suspense, mystery and terror. By the end I felt like I knew a little more about what it meant to be human... and I also couldn't fall asleep without the blanket pulled all the way up to my neck.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book must be bought June 21, 2011

This is the kind of book that is perfect for someone like me, aka/ someone that doesn't actually like horror. It's short enough that reading it doesn't ever stray into torture, and intense enough that there is no physical way to put it down and go to sleep. If you're a slow reader (like me) you will be up into the early morning hours reading.

WARNING: Recommend having cat, or other such pet around while reading. They will help keep you from dying of fright.

5.0 out of 5 stars From "The Horror Fiction Review" November 21, 2012
Format:Paperback
As soon as I'd finished reading THE LOON, I chased down Michaelbrent Collings to rave about it, and he rewarded me with ANOTHER book! (I love this job!).

RISING FEARS is his take on the one-mysterious-night-in-a-small-town story. The small town in this instance is Rising, Washington ... where everyone is neighborly, everyone looks out for one another, and everyone is afraid of something.

In fact, that's why these people live in their nice small town: most of them are afraid of something, hiding out from or on the run from or avoiding facing the fears of the outside world. Even those who can't wait to get out harbor their own inner dreads, secret terrors, awful memories and private phobias.

Things aren't about to work out so well for the good folks of Rising. They're about to find out that some fears can't be hidden from, run from or avoided. Not when the fears come from inside. Not when they're becoming all too real. Real enough to kill.

The writing is superb. The characters are believable and sympathetic (well, except for one, but she's supposed to be a selfish little snot so it's okay to not like her very much). Once again, the theme of a parent who's lost a child figures strongly; it's powerful stuff, and written from the perspective of experience that no one should ever have to suffer.

The story's reminiscent of Koontz' PHANTOMS, streamlined to the essentials. Though I may sometimes get teasing flack for "clobbering" Koontz these days, back when PHANTOMS came out he was at the top of his game so I definitely intend it as a compliment!

I like this book so much I've read it twice. A small town cop comes to grip with a terrible loss. This fast paced story has a very real sentiment, embrace your fear or be consumed by it. In a world where fear surrounds us this novel hits a nerve !

I can't stop reading this author. My only complaint is that he's almost to good at what he does. I like my books to last a while, but I just can't seem to put his down! I don't know what I'm gonna do WHEN I finish all his books. You hear that, Michael Brent Collings? You better keep delivering ;)

A book about facing your fears is scary to say the least, and the author did a great job on the charters in the book, so if you want a fast but scary read this is your book.
